Jennifer Garner is reportedly returning as Elektra for a cameo role in the upcoming Deadpool 3.
Normally, a report such as this — which did not name the individual providing the information — would be something I would immediately consider suspect. However, the news of Garner’s reprisal as Elektra comes to us from none other than The Hollywood Reporter’s email newsletter, Heat Vision, which is a fairly reliable outlet for developments such as this. So I do give it some credibility. According to the report:
“Sources describe the role as a cameo, one of multiple rumored in the film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.”
Borys Kit, a writer of the newsletter, also shared the news on Twitter.
The last time we saw Garner’s sai-slinging character was in 2005’s Elektra. Though the movie has a poor reputation with critics, it represented one of the first woman-led superhero movies in an era when that was especially a rarity. The character also appeared in 2003’s Ben Affleck-starring Daredevil, which was similarly panned by reviewers.
Some fan responses to the news ranged from indifferent to downright mean, in all likelihood due to the duology’s less-than-stellar reputation.
To give Garner some credit, it isn’t necessarily her fault the previous outings of the character didn’t go over well with fans and cinema lovers since most of the hate was leveled at the underwhelming writing and lack of overall vision.
I, for one, will be glad to see Garner’s Elektra make a comeback and for one very obvious reason: Reynolds’ initial appearance as Deadpool was similarly hated in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but he managed to turn it around in future films, didn’t he? As much as I could understand fans being lukewarm to this idea, I do think it’s only fair we give Garner the same benefit of the doubt as we gave Reynolds, because ultimately, what’s the worst that could go wrong with a minor cameo?
I guess we’ll find out when Deadpool 3 hits theaters on May 3, 2024.
