Netflix Announces Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere Date With Creepy Promo

Netflix Announces Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere Date With Creepy Promo

It only took two seasons (and a truckload of Eggos) for Stranger Things to earn its status as both a Netflix staple and must-watch television.

Inspired by some of the film greats of yesterday (and starring the stars of tomorrow), the 80s-set sci-fi show takes place in the quaint town of Hawkins, Indiana, which gets caught up in the middle of a government conspiracy after the local energy department begins experimenting with dark forces beyond their control.

And so, the Upside Down was born. It’s a realm where sinister and evil things fester, and though Eleven and her friends were able to fend off the Shadow Monster and his pack of Demodogs during season 2, Stranger Things season 3 will be bringing us a whole new saga of thrills and supernatural spills when it premieres on July 4th.

Yes, that’s right, we now have a premiere date for the new run thanks to the creepy and cryptic promo up above. It starts off innocent enough, of course, with “footage of the final moments of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve as we watch the “big apple” drop to ring in 1985.” But it’s not long before things get a bit dark as the clip’s interrupted with some technological glitches which hint at something more sinister to come.

Don’t expect to learn any plot details from this promo – unless perhaps you dig really deep for some hidden easter eggs – but it’s an intriguing tease of what awaits us. And besides, we already know a little bit about what to expect, with Netflix having revealed that season 3 will jump forward another year and take place in 1985. We also know that Eleven will be sporting a new look, while her adoptive father, Sheriff Hopper, seems to be getting some luck in his love life for once.

On the whole, it’s said that the next season of Stranger Things will be inspired by the works of John Carpenter more than ever and we’ll get to see just how everything comes together this summer, when the new run debuts on July 4th.

Doctor Who Showrunner Teases Classic Monsters For Season 12

Doctor Who Showrunner Teases Classic Monsters For Season 12

Though Doctor Who season 11 was praised for its pioneering spirit and female lead (read: Jodie Whittaker), there were certainly a number of issues that longtime fans had with the latest run of the sci-fi show.

Perhaps the biggest was the lack of any classic monsters – like the Daleks and Cybermen. Their absence was disappointing for Doctor Who purists who consider them to be very much part of the show’s DNA, but given that showrunner Chris Chibnall was trying to usher in a whole new era of the series, it’s not too surprising that the creative team wanted to introduce new threats for the Time Lord and her companions to face.

But with season 11 now behind us, it looks as if things are going to change when it comes to the ‘no classic monsters’ rule. For one, the Daleks are widely expected to show up in the upcoming New Year’s special and now, Chibnall has teased that more familiar foes might make an appearance in 2020.

During a recent Q&A session, Chibnall spoke about season 12 and what fans can expect. In particular, he was asked by someone whether we might see any of the classic monsters and though he wouldn’t confirm it outright, he did tease that it’s certainly possible, saying:

“Well, maybe we’ll do some [classic monsters], then,” the writer said playfully. “I’ll have a think.”

Again, that’s hardly a firm confirmation that we’ll be reacquainted with the likes of Cybermen and Weeping Angels when Doctor Who returns for season 12 in 2020, but after the backlash the show saw this year due to their exclusion, it seems likely that Chibnall and his team will be doing away with that rule for the next run. And frankly, we think that’s the right decision.

A Quiet Place 2 Will Show Its World From Another Perspective

A Quiet Place 2 Will Show Its World From Another Perspective

With the still-untitled A Quiet Place 2 not due to come out for well over a year, it’s not surprising that writer-director John Krasinski has been keeping very, well, quiet on the project as of late. But while it sounds like the filmmaker is still working out the details of the follow-up to his acclaimed horror hit, the Jack Ryan star is starting to open up a little about the approach he’s taking to the sequel.

Krasinski has hinted in the past that he’s more interested in further exploring the post-apocalyptic world introduced in the first movie than continuing the story of the Abbott family, and in a recent interview with Deadline, the filmmaker elaborated on this notion, saying:

“The idea for it is pretty simple. I’m writing now—I don’t have it fleshed out—but the thought that occurred to me, that really excited me about it, was that most sequels are about the return of a hero or a villain. You take this character that people loved once and you bring them back, and you have to create a new world around them. We have the exact opposite setup. We have the world, and you can drop whoever you want into that world and everyone feels connected to it.”

From the sound of things, we could be looking at a series model in the vein of George A. Romero’s zombie movies, where each sequel has little-to-no narrative overlap with what came before, save for the fictional reality it inhabits. Krasinski went on to explain that it was the potential of this cinematic world populated by sound-sensitive monsters that inspired him to sign on for A Quiet Place 2.

“The reason I decided to go back, in the end, was this world is so rich, and it’s so much fun to explore. There are so many different things to see now. Everyone else in the world is experiencing this, so I’m curious to see what that looks like from another perspective.”

That being said, the writer also admits that he may have let himself be manipulated a little into wanting to make the movie, explaining:

“I’ll be honest with you: I really didn’t want to do the sequel. It was never built to launch sequels, which we all knew, and the studio knew too. But also, I’m a realist. I know that when you have a success like this, everyone wants to make another one. I told them to go find another filmmaker and writer, and they said, ‘But don’t you have an idea?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I have a tiny idea,’ so they said, ‘OK, while we’re talking to other people, keep thinking about it.’ They basically mind-tricked me into wanting to write it.”

But whatever Krasinski’s reasons were for signing on for this next film, it’s clear that there’ll be a lot of fans eager to see how he fleshes out the incessantly tense world he helped create. And we’ll find out if A Quiet Place 2 can live up to the hype when the film hits theaters on May 15th, 2020.

Netflix Just Added A Ton Of Great Horror Movies

Netflix Just Added A Ton Of Great Horror Movies

Netflix recently revealed which films would be coming to their library to ring in the New Year, and they’re looking like a great collection for horror fans. Hailing from 2001-2004, you can now stream Jason X, Ghost Ship, Eight Legged Freaks, Gothika, Cellular and The Butterfly Effect. Of course, none of these are stone cold classics, but they’re all worthwhile watches if you can put up with a bit of wonky early noughties CGI and occasionally very hammy acting.

My pick of these would be time travel/parallel universe caper The Butterfly Effect. Sure, Ashton Kutcher might be a bit wooden in it, but I’ve always enjoyed watching him gradually screw up his life more and more with each change he makes to the timeline. I also still find the overblown scene where he wakes up to realize he’s got no arms pretty funny, if only for Kutcher’s very silly performance. Now, we don’t know whether Netflix is screening the director’s cut of the film, but let’s hope so, because I simply won’t accept a version of this movie that doesn’t end with a fetus committing suicide in the womb.

As for the rest, I’ve always felt oversized spider creature feature Eight Legged Freaks is worth a watch, if only for David Arquette delivering a committed performance in the face of CGI spiders. Plus, it features Scarlett Johansson in a towel getting webbed to a wall by a spider, which has got to cater to at least one very specific fetish.

As for the rest, Jason X is an interesting and actually pretty witty update on the Friday the 13th formula that’s aged surprisingly well and Ghost Ship at least does what it says on the tin and provides ghosts on a ship. I struggle to say anything positive about Gothika and Cellular, though. The former features Halle Berry gamely struggling through absolutely terrible dialogue and the latter’s an extremely of its time movie that criticizes how much people are addicted to old-style cellphones (a fear that looks a bit quaint from a 2018 perspective).

Tell us, have you got any favorites amongst these new Netflix additions? Be sure to sound off in the comments section down below.

Geoff Johns Says There Should Be A Black Manta Solo Movie After Aquaman

Geoff Johns Says There Should Be A Black Manta Solo Movie After Aquaman

Though the new Aquaman movie sees Patrick Wilson’s Orm as the main villain, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s take on David Kane, aka Black Manta, has certainly earned its fans, among whom is DC writer Geoff Johns.

The Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer claimed in a recent interview that an Aquaman movie without Black Manta simply couldn’t, or at least shouldn’t, be done:

“It’s impossible. It’s like doing a Batman movie without the Batmobile. You just shouldn’t do it. Some people were like, you can’t do the big helmet. It’s like saying Joker without the smile!”

Johns himself worked on the story for Arthur Curry’s solo debut, and during his collaboration with director James Wan, having to fit David Kane’s arc into the film was reportedly a source of some difficulty and stress:

“There was a moment when the script was really going and James texted me or emailed me, and said Black Manta’s story may be too big for this movie. What do you think? And I didn’t reply, I just went to his office and I said, ‘Black Manta has to be in the movie.’ He was like, ‘I know!!!’”

Despite a runtime that stretches to almost two-and-a-half-hours, Aquaman only has so many scenes it can give over to Black Manta, so it’s probably a good thing that Abdul-Mateen seems game for future films. As the actor himself has observed, David Kane has been known to pop up in a variety of different comic book storylines opposite the likes of Arthur Curry and the Suicide Squad, but if you ask Johns, the popular villain ought to have a movie of his own:

“There should be a Black Manta movie. That’d be a cool movie.”

While it doesn’t look like Warner Bros. has any plans for a Black Manta solo flick right now, the post-credits of Aquaman suggests big plans for the character in the follow-up, and given how well the movie has been doing this month at the box office, it’s safe to say that the sequel is a go.

Though Aquaman 2 is presumably still a long wait away, there might well be opportunities for Black Manta to show up in other projects in the meantime, be it Suicide Squad 2 or maybe even Birds of Prey, but before all that, director David F. Sandberg is set to explore a very different part of the DCEU when Shazam! comes out on April 5th, 2019.
