‘American Psycho’ author names his single biggest issue with modern horror

‘American Psycho’ author names his single biggest issue with modern horror

Bret Easton Ellis of American Psycho fame has come in with his two cents on what consistently goes wrong with modern horror, and it’s hard to disagree with the acclaimed author.

Ellis wrote American Psycho as more of a parody and satire of masculinity, capitalism, and consumerism, but has obvious horror undertones thanks to its main character Patrick Bateman is a sociopathic serial killer who may or may not be imagining everything happening around him.

The year’s most controversial blockbuster finally gets streaming date confirmed

2022 saw a resurgence in non-franchise films with new, original-ish films being some of the most spoken about, perhaps none more so than Olivia Wilde’s rollercoaster release which has been embroiled in some of the most bizarre drama of recent cinema history.

Don’t Worry Darling promised audiences an adventure into a dark underbelly beneath an apparent paradise, but instead ended up (ironically) playing host to behind-the-scenes drama of a dark underbelly in Hollywood relationships. Now, the drama-laden film is set for a streaming debut, so get your salads ready.

Fans realize yet again that Obi-Wan Kenobi is the most tragic character in all of ‘Star Wars’

Fans realize yet again that Obi-Wan Kenobi is the most tragic character in all of ‘Star Wars’

Forget about Anakin Skywalker, his fall to the dark side, and his ultimate redemption in Return of the Jedi. Star Wars fans can unanimously agree that the most heartbreakingly tragic character in all of the galaxy far, far away and its extensive history is none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi, the man who lost everything but his faith.

We’re talking about a man who forsook his love out of duty, lost his mentor and father figure, had to witness the love of his life die in front of his eyes because of the same person who killed that mentor, and to top it all off, Obi-Wan watched as what he had fought to preserve for decades went up in flames, with the Jedi all but destroyed and his padawan, friend, and brother lost to the shadow.

‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’ closes film festival with massive standing ovation

‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’ closes film festival with massive standing ovation

Guillermo Del Toro is one of those individuals that sprinkles gold dust on nearly everything he does. The director has brought us some of the more chilling, fantastical, and beautifully told stories of the last few decades and his recent addition to his long list of achievements has been met with equal enthusiasm.

The Mexican director’s recent stop-motion adaption of Pinocchio received a huge standing ovation at the Animation is Film Festival in L.A. The film has a stellar cast with the likes of Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, and Christoph Waltz voicing the characters, but at the event, Del Toro also added that the animators themselves are just as much actors as actors are.

Advocates of all things eerie celebrate an unfairly ignored paranoid thriller that’s only remembered for one thing

If you were to ask somebody about 2004’s haunting psychological thriller The Machinist, then there’s probably a 99 percent change their response would be something along the lines of “is that the one where Christian Bale emaciates himself?”

While the answer is definitely yes, with the Method man infamously putting himself through the wringer to drop 62 points before shooting through the not-recommended means of cigarettes, coffee, and a solitary apple, there’s so much more going on under the hood of Brad Anderson’s harrowing descent into the mind of one troubled soul.

‘Black Adam’ passes ‘Birds of Prey’ at the global box office in less than 10 days

‘Black Adam’ passes ‘Birds of Prey’ at the global box office in less than 10 days

The hierarchy of power may not have changed so much as been slightly altered, but the reverberations of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam have already been felt much further afield than the rebranded DCEU, with Henry Cavill ditching Netflix’s The Witcher for reasons that surely have to do with his long-awaited return as Superman.

After spending 15 years in development, there was plenty of pressure on The Rock’s superhero debut to deliver, and Black Adam is delivering the goods after spending a second consecutive week at the top of the global box office. Critics may not have been enamored by its charms, but the discrepancy between a 40 percent critical score and 90 percent user rating on Rotten Tomatoes is par for the course when it comes to the star and producer’s output.

Netflix’s breathtaking new war epic torpedoes the Top 10 in 89 countries

The spookiest day on the calendar may be right around the corner, but Netflix subscribers have been checking out an original movie that’s haunting for an entirely different set of reasons, with the latest version of All Quiet on the Western Front bombarding the platform’s most-watched rankings.

Per FlixPatrol, Edward Berger’s worthy successor to the classic 1930 adaptation of the novel of the same name has become a Top 10 smash hit in a colossal 89 countries around the world. It may not have been able to dislodge serial killer thriller The Good Nurse at the summit of the global charts, but it’s already managed to hit number one in 15 countries – so there’s a very high chance it’ll be peering down on the competition by this time tomorrow.

Horror fans wonder when an all-time classic stopped being scary

Horror fans wonder when an all-time classic stopped being scary

Are horror movies of yesterday as scary as they are today? Fans are chiming in. To answer that question, there are many factors from what films were allowed to do years ago compared to what they are capable of doing now.

This conversation started with BatimadosAnos60 on Reddit asking a simple question after watching The Exorcist for the second time. Widely regarded as the scariest movie ever made, is the film outdated or has it stood the test of time? It comes down to the viewer, but there were some very good points from a wide range of horror fans.

Marvel Studios producer offers a huge update on the future of the Eternals

Marvel Studios producer offers a huge update on the future of the Eternals

We may have gotten a flash of text reading “Eternals will return” after that tense post-credits scene with Kit Harington, a magic sword, and Mahershala Ali’s voice, but that was before the film managed to nab the unsavory distinction of being the worst-reviewed film to ever come out of Marvel Studios, with the moldy cherry on top being that it’s the only film to be certified “Rotten” by critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Having hit such a low with Eternals, some were skeptical as to whether this would be the end of the line for Sersi and company, especially Druig actor Barry Keoghan, who has on multiple occasions been quite vocal over the lack of news surrounding the MCU’s most obscure team.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ director confronts speculation he’s tackling ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

The fifth and sixth assemblies of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are in development and on the way, but Avengers: The Kang Dynasty already has a significant advantage over Secret Wars, the latter of which was recently delayed by six months.

The former has Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton poised to wield the megaphone, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness on screenwriting duties. The latter has Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness veteran Michael Waldron furiously hammering the script into shape as we speak, but the top job remains vacant.

Latest Marvel News: Dwayne Johnson incites a war on Thor while DC allegedly tries to poach the MCU’s biggest asset

Now that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has taken over as the new co-head of DC Studios, he’s attempting to bridge the gap between the fandoms of Marvel and its Distinguished Competition. But despite his valiant efforts, it seems some battles just cannot be stopped as Black Adam‘s Dwayne Johnson has inadvertently waged war on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and a wild new rumor claims that Warner Bros. execs attempted to steal Marvel’s MVP to save their own flailing franchise.

The hierarchy of power in the DC universe just changed with the introduction of Black Adam, but would the god-like anti-hero be able to defeat Marvel’s actual god of an Avenger? The Rock has got us wondering after sharing The Talk‘s spoof sketch featuring a Teth-Adam and Thor Odinson confrontation and tagging Chris Hemsworth, thereby inciting the fans to get into a fierce debate as they ponder who would emerge victorious from such a deathmatch. Make it happen, James Gunn!

Henry Cavill’s jam-packed schedule could keep pushing ‘Man of Steel 2’ that little bit further away

It’s already been nine years since Man of Steel arrived to reboot Superman, launch the DCEU, and leave fans demanding a sequel, so the vociferous supporters of Zack Snyder’s origin story are well accustomed to the wait for any concrete news on a second installment.

Just when it was beginning to look as if all hope was lost, though, a combination of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and a regime change at Warner Bros. Discovery opened the door for the franchise’s canonical Kal-El to make his triumphant return, with Cavill now happy to shout from the rooftops that he’s back in a big way.

Latest Sci-Fi News: The internet realizes something mindblowing about one of the most popular sci-fi movies and ‘Star Wars’ fans remain salty over this reunion

Latest Sci-Fi News: The internet realizes something mindblowing about one of the most popular sci-fi movies and ‘Star Wars’ fans remain salty over this reunion

Hollywood has been recycling stories that work since forever, so it should hardly come off as a surprise anymore when you suddenly realize two very different flicks at first glance could pass off as one another in an alternate reality. But it seems as though even knowing this principle doesn’t usually prepare cinephiles for some of the weirdest genre-defying parallels in the industry.

As we leave them to pick their jaws off the floor, two other internet fandoms gear up to fight back against what they perceive to be lackluster storytelling; Star Wars fans for the way The Mandalorian rushed the reunion between Din Djarin and Baby Grogu, and Doctor Who stans for how Chris Chibnall completely sidelined Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor even though she was the first person of color to portray the titular protagonist in BBC’s long-running sci-fi series.

Fans debate Black Adam vs. Thor after Dwayne Johnson teases Chris Hemsworth

After a lighthearted Black Adam vs. Thor parody was signal-boosted by Dwayne Johnson, comic book movie fans are seriously considering how a rivalry between the DC and Marvel superheroes would actually play out.

Black Adam star Johnson seemed to tease Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth when he tagged the blond-haired Australian while sharing the humorous video on Twitter. The original video Johnson retweeted came from The Talk CBS host Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, who dressed as Black Adam knocking on a wall of which Thor, portrayed by Jerry O’Connell, was on the other side.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Les Misérables’ screen test was somehow less successful than ‘Cats’

Taylor Swift’s ‘Les Misérables’ screen test was somehow less successful than ‘Cats’

Appearing in 2012’s Les Misérables wouldn’t have necessarily pumped up Taylor Swift‘s reputation in musicals, especially if it was going to be followed up by the disastrous and nightmarish Cats anyway, so her not bagging the role of Cosette or Eponine probably worked out for the best.

Continuing to celebrate the release of Midnights, and breaking several streaming records while at it, Swift recently appeared in a bejeweled frock on the Graham Norton Show alongside a roster of other A-listers including Eddie Redmayne. The two of them pairing up on a talk show is something that no Swiftie would’ve possibly thought worthy of a second look, but as ever, looks can be deceiving.

Film fans ponder which movies would be improved by Nick Fury showing up in a post-credits scene

Film fans ponder which movies would be improved by Nick Fury showing up in a post-credits scene

We all remember that special moment back in 2008, when we got completely caught off guard by the mysterious post-credits scene at the end of the first Iron Man movie, in which Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, sat down with protagonist Tony Stark to talk about the Avengers Initiative. What followed was arguably the largest pop culture phenomenon in the last decade; one that looks primed to continue spilling into the next.

But what if it wasn’t Iron Man that housed that faithful cameo? What if it was Donnie Darko? What if it was The Fifth Element? What if, God forbid, it was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?

Horror fanatics relish in grimy and trashy forgotten monster flick

The 1980s were the battleground for countless B-horror movies which revelled in their own trashiness and absurdity, and some forty years later a surprisingly inspirational one is getting reminisced upon by the genre’s hardcore.

1984 saw the release of C.H.U.D., a film forgotten by mainstream audiences that has now resurfaced thanks to the memories of the internet and a resurgence in B-movie culture. The monster flick features some truly awful acting and highly questionable effects, but gels together in such a fun way you won’t care.

LFF Review: ‘Women Talking’ marks a new level of maturity for writer director Sarah Polley

LFF Review: ‘Women Talking’ marks a new level of maturity for writer director Sarah Polley

Adapted from the novel by Miriam Toews, Women Talking represents a cinematic deconstruction of feminine identity. Complex in its dissection, comprehensive in its encompassing approach, and packed with powerhouse performances on all sides this feels like a political treatise.

Charting the course of conversations discussing female roles within an isolated colony, following heinous physical assaults and no apparent retribution, writer-director Sarah Polley brings together the full force of some formidable character actors. Polley lays down her agenda and sets her cinematic stall to hold court on a woman’s role in society, shaping, molding, and refining Women Talking into an even-handed examination of what that means in reality.
