A Great Underrated Thriller Hits Netflix Tomorrow

A Great Underrated Thriller Hits Netflix Tomorrow

A lot of great content is coming to Netflix for February, including Martin Scorsese’s underrated horror-thriller Shutter Island. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring movie has a decent critical reputation, albeit without usually appearing in the top lists of Scorsese’s work. Why, then, is it worth checking out this feature when it comes to the streaming service from tomorrow?

Shutter Island was adapted from Dennis Lehane’s novel of the same name, and sees DiCaprio play Teddy Daniels, a Deputy U.S. Marshal tasked with discovering the truth behind a patient disappearance at an island’s psychiatric facility. Set in 1954, the story then sees Daniels discover increasingly confusing information about why he’s on the case, and what’s seemingly going on with the staff and those receiving treatment.

Defined by its twists and turns, Shutter Island is an effective thriller that shows off Scorsese’s impressive mastery of the genre. The picture also references classic film noir tropes, and while not an immediate hit with reviewers, is arguably strong enough to deserve a rewatch, especially if you’ve forgotten the key mysteries of the plot. Audiences were certainly taken with the film in 2010, wherein it became Scorsese’s second highest-grossing worldwide release.

Shutter Island

DiCaprio’s performance also came as part of his long relationship with Scorsese, with Shutter Island being the fourth of his collaborations with the filmmaker. The director himself would go down a different path with his next work, the family-friendly Hugo, before reuniting with DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street. Although it’s fair to say that Shutter Island isn’t among his most innovative works, it certainly holds up after eleven years as a solid experience.

There are plenty of other options to choose from, though, if you don’t want to revisit Shutter Island, as we head into February, including a lot of decent content to watch that was added this weekend. Alternatively, if you want more DiCaprio, you can revisit his lead role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception this week. What’s your take on DiCaprio and Scorsese’s noir team-up, though? As ever, let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section down below.

10 New Movies Hit VOD This Weekend, Including Another Anthony Mackie Sci-Fi

10 New Movies Hit VOD This Weekend, Including Another Anthony Mackie Sci-Fi

Based on his career over the last decade, Anthony Mackie is clearly a big fan of sci-fi, with the actor starring in a huge number of projects set within the parameters of the genre, which would technically include his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sam Wilson given that the definition of the term covers fictional scientific and technological advances, something that’s par for the course when it comes to the franchise’s output.

Having recently headlined Netflix original Outside the Wire, the middling effort that managed to nab the number one spot on the Top 10 most-watched list and saw the leading man more than prove his chops as an action hero despite the various shortcomings in the story, he’s back again with another sci-fi project this week, although this one couldn’t be more different.

Synchronic hails from filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who built their personal brand on existential and completely unique meldings of sci-fi and horror, which makes them such exciting choices to direct a couple of episodes of the MCU’s Moon Knight show. Mackie stars alongside Jamie Dornan as two longtime best friends and paramedics, with several grisly crime scenes causing the former to stumble upon a missing persons case that evolves into a time traveling psychedelic mystery.

Synchronic

There are only a handful of new movies and documentaries to enter the VOD market this weekend, with Synchronic the pick of the bunch, but you can check out the full list below:

To Buy:

Stockton on my Mind
A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem

To Rent:

Born a Champion
The Night
Caged
Haymaker
Savage State
#LIKE
Trafficked: A Parent’s Worst Nightmare
Synchronic

If you’ve ever wanted to see Sean Patrick Flannery star in an MMA drama alongside Dennis Quaid, then by all means give Born a Champion a shot, but the rest of this week’s new VOD arrivals all fall firmly into bargain basement B-tier territory.

Godzilla Vs. Kong Theory Says Gojira Is Actually Mechagodzilla

Godzilla Vs. Kong Theory Says Gojira Is Actually Mechagodzilla

The main mystery of the trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong was the revelation that the King of the Monsters was acting wildly out of character by directly attacking humans. Several theories have been put forwards of what might be causing his turn to villainy, but the simplest is that it’s not actually Godzilla causing the destruction, but the impostor Mechagodzilla.

Mechagodzilla, as you have likely already surmised, is a robotic duplicate of the King of the Monsters who is, along with King Ghidorah, generally considered to be his nemesis. It first appeared in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, where it was depicted as a creation of an alien race that planned for it to take out Godzilla to pave their way for world domination. It appeared with a covering of scales imitating Godzilla, only for the ruse to be revealed when it was attacked by Godzilla’s ally Anguirus, and a portion of the disguise was torn off to reveal the metal beneath.

It’s a distinct possibility that this precedent of Mechagodzilla initially masquerading as Godzilla has been repurposed for the new movie. The robot’s presence has already been spoiled, and brief allusions from the trailer seemingly confirm its malevolent intentions. If Mechagodzilla is the one running amok, the plan is probably to make humanity turn against Godzilla and destroy him, thus preventing him from stopping whatever nefarious follow-up scheme has been put in place. Kong comes into it from believing he is attacking the real Godzilla (and at one point may well encounter him and carry on the fight, unaware of the lizard lord’s innocence), until the true villain is revealed and the ancestral rivals end up uniting against the common enemy.

There will probably be at least one more trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong before the film’s release in March that may offer more tacit references to the metal menace, but the main reveal will likely be left for the movie itself, along with whether or not it will first be seen wearing the skin of its biological inspiration.

Petition To Remove Amber Heard From Aquaman 2 Cracks 1.8M Signatures

Petition To Remove Amber Heard From Aquaman 2 Cracks 1.8M Signatures

If it wasn’t for Amber Heard’s mere existence, then fans would unanimously be on board with Aquaman 2. After all, James Wan’s blockbuster raced to over $1.1 billion at the box office to become the highest-grossing DC Comics adaptation ever made, with audiences fully investing in the filmmaker’s wise decision to position a title hero that had been reduced to a figure of ridicule in many circles as the star of an outrageously cheesy and tongue in cheek fantasy epic that embraced the ridiculousness of the premise.

However, Johnny Depp’s supporters continue to rail against anything that either involves Heard or can be viewed as a slight against her ex-husband, which includes but is no way limited to review-bombing CBS ‘ Stephen King adaptation The Stand based on her involvement, threatening boycotts against Fantastic Beasts 3 and Aquaman 2, directing a tirade of abuse towards the talent behind the Animaniacs revival and canceling their Netflix subscriptions after believing the false claims that the streaming service were actively purging Depp’s back catalogue from the library.

Just like the legal battles between the two Hollywood stars, the continued backlash against Heard is far from over, with the petition to have her removed as Aquaman 2‘s Mera now passing 1.8 million signatures. The actress may have claimed that people were being paid to campaign against her, but one cursory glance at the internet makes it pretty clear that she’s public enemy number one in the eyes of many people.

Of course, there’s no chance she’s going to be fired from the role unless the next courtroom case goes overwhelmingly against her, so as things stand she’ll be reporting for duty to the set of Aquaman 2 later this year.
