WGTC’s best movies of 2021

Though 2021 will always be remembered as the second year of our collective battle against the coronavirus, it was also a year marked by epic and in some cases game-changing films. As nerve-wracking as it might have been for many of us to travel to movie theaters and catch a flick in close proximity to strangers, millions of viewers didn’t let it stop them from enjoying the year’s new releases.

Whether it was one of the year’s many thrilling superhero films, a heart-pounding new drama, or a classic Disney villain’s origin story, 2021 gave us plenty of welcome breaks from pandemic overwhelm.

We’re getting a slick batch of new images for Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman in the upcoming film The Batman, which sees the cunning Selina Kyle in a variety of outfits and scenarios. These includes images of her speaking in close quarters to Robert Pattinson’s Batman, sporting a pink wig in some kind of disguise, and wearing her signature cat burglar outfit. (But, for the latter, imagined as a black leather sneaking suit with an accompanying beanie that has a hole cut out for her eyes and two vaguely cat ear-like points.)

What Has Macaulay Culkin Done Since Home Alone?

Decidedly one of the most beloved and iconic of child stars was Macaulay Culkin. Dominating the 90s most notably with his performance as the young sociopath Kevin McCallister in the first two “Home Alone” films, this role alone would have been enough to keep that smirking troublemaker in our heads forever. It’s too bad he was too old in 1999 to play Cole in “The Sixth Sense” because he already had played a dead kid twice by this point and probably would have been a shoe-in for a kid who can talk to ghosts.

Although some of us still prefer the previous and equally iconic Xmas outing by director Bob Clark, the adventures of young Ralphie have left an indelible mark on our culture. From stocking leg lamps to making ‘triple dog dares’, the cultural impact has become inextricable from the holiday. But many wonder, what happened to Ralphie anyway? I mean, there IS a sequel, 1994’s “It Runs in the Family” later retitled “My Summer Story” or in an alternate universe, there’s the “A Christmas Story 2” from 2012. For the record, you can skip both of them. Really what folks wonder is, what happened to actor Peter Billingsley who played Ralphie in the original film?

The answer is, quite a lot, although it certainly would be understandable if you blinked and missed a lot of his appearances in films and tv shows over the decades. Initially best known for his prolific tv commercial appearances, especially as ‘Messy Marvin’ for Hershey’s Chocolate syrup, he had some prominent film roles before “A Christmas Story” made him iconic. He was nominated for a “Best Young Comedian” Young Artist Award for his part opposite Burt Reynolds in 1981’s “Paternity” and got another nomination for a multi-year run as a co-host on NBC’s insanely popular “Real People” tv series. But did he ever do anything to match the legendary status of Ralphie?

Arnold Schwarzenegger once directed a Christmas TV movie back in 1992, and he’s also recently lived out the spirit of the holiday.

As reported by Deadline, the actor and iconic immigrant donated 25 “tiny homes” to formerly homeless veterans in the Los Angeles area just before the most significant secular religious holiday in North America. Speaking about the $250,000 gift on Twitter Thursday, he urged all to give back and not think of the self this year.

Today is a day of the week, so that means that Spider-Man: No Way Home has at least one record to break. True to form, the web-slinging blockbuster has surpassed the $404 million haul of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to become Sony’s highest-grossing domestic release ever.

Bear in mind, it took Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan’s video game-inspired adventure 23 weekends to reach that figure, which No Way Home has managed to surpass in eight days. Quite frankly, the speed at which the Marvel and Sony co-production is toppling benchmarks has become ridiculous.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ crossing $1 billion at the box office tomorrow

It’s been roughly 24 hours since we brought word of Spider-Man: No Way Home smashing at least one box office record, so we were about due. Seeing as it’s Christmas, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiversal blockbuster has only gone and toppled a handful, including a couple of major milestones.

The latest numbers have No Way Home earning $385 million domestically in seven days, becoming the third-fastest movie to reach that mark after Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On an international basis, Tom Holland’s latest stint under the spandex has $490 million in the coffers, which means two huge benchmarks will be blown away by the end of tomorrow.
