DC’s upcoming queer love story is already blowing Marvel’s LGBTQ+ rep out of the water

DC’s upcoming queer love story is already blowing Marvel’s LGBTQ+ rep out of the water

Whenever new DCU films are announced, it is impossible to not compare them to Marvel’s MCU offerings. While this can sometimes lead to unfair comparisons, if one of James Gunn’s announcements becomes a reality, it’s clear that the DCU will be at the forefront of mainstream LGBTQ+ representation – something that Marvel has repeatedly dropped the ball on.

One of the films announced today was The Authority, a movie about the fan-favorite superhero team from DC’s now-defunct Wildstorm imprint. Making their debut in The Authority #1 in May 1999, this team presented a different take on the superhero format, featuring a group of heroes who, rather than stopping crime, aimed to prevent it from happening by shaping world events by any means necessary. This often led to the group toppling governments and getting involved in other shady schemes to guarantee society progressed as they saw fit.

M. Night Shyamalan defends his less-popular movies, including ‘The Last Airbender’

Few directors have ridden the ups and downs of Hollywood more dramatically than M. Night Shyamalan. With his mind-melting storylines, standout cinematic style, and signature twist endings — this Indian-born American filmmaker is truly one of a kind, responsible for giving us some of the best bits of storytelling entertainment has ever seen, including The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, as well as several films that are, well, significantly less-celebrated.

His latest feature film, Knock at the Cabin, looks to warp our perceptions of reality yet again, by the way.

James Gunn’s DCU has already beaten Kevin Feige’s MCU in one simple yet ingenious way

James Gunn’s DCU has already beaten Kevin Feige’s MCU in one simple yet ingenious way

In the weeks and months leading up to James Gunn‘s DCU announcements, superhero fans were skeptical that not only could the rebooted franchise escape the shadow of the shattered Snyderverse, but also that it could emerge from under the thumb of the all-powerful MCU. With Gunn finally unveiling the full slate for the first wave of the newly furnished DC universe, however, the filmmaker has immediately bested Kevin Feige‘s Marvel Studios in one small yet meaningful way.

Along with announcing 11 new titles coming over the next few years, ranging from movie reboot Superman: Legacy to a Green Lantern buddy-cop TV series called Lanterns, Gunn also confirmed that we should be referring to this opening gambit for the franchise as the DCU Chapter One. While that’s an obvious spin on the MCU’s Phase One through Six categorization system, the DCU is going one better by applying subtitles to its individual phases. In this case, Chapter One is called “Gods & Monsters.”

What James Gunn’s Batman announcement could mean for Robert Pattinson

With James Gunn and producer Peter Safran officially taking the reigns over at DC Studios, it’s become quite clear that some pretty radical changes are already in the works for the DCU. In a recent Twitter announcement, Gunn details the company’s narrative plans for the future, as well as the fate of their existing properties.

One character in particular has fans a little spooked, and it’s not just because he wears a bat costume. Yes, we’re talking about Batman — The Caped Crusader, Gotham’s Dark Knight, World’s Greatest Detective. What the heck is going to happen to The Bat?

Latest Marvel News: Brie Larson backlash is avenged by the original female superhero as Chris Hemsworth finally apologizes for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Latest Marvel News: Brie Larson backlash is avenged by the original female superhero as Chris Hemsworth finally apologizes for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

What are two of the most divisive and controversial Marvel movies of the lot? Captain Marvel and Thor: Love and Thunder are certainly in the top five, for differing reasons. It’s interesting, then, that both of these films have been addressed in some form over the past 24 hours, with Odinson himself Chris Hemsworth offering a kind of apology for the much-disliked 2022 flick while an unlikely defender has risen up to avenge the unfair backlash Brie Larson and the women of the MCU have faced over the years. Let’s dive in…

Chris Hemsworth says he’s sorry for Thor: Love and Thunder… Or one aspect of it

It’s what fans have been waiting months to hear — Chris Hemsworth has finally said “sorry” for Thor: Love and Thunder… Well, kinda. Although some less-forgiving folks would likely demand that the Australian star and Taika Waititi write a ten-page letter of apology for the way the fourquel turned out, Hemsworth has at least volunteered a mea culpa for something that occurred in the movie, in a joking response to Hercules himself Brett Goldstein talking about his MCU debut during a recent talk show appearance. At least it was related to Russell Crowe’s Zeus, one of the film’s biggest misses if you ask some people.

Fans know exactly which ‘Juno’ star they want to see in the MCU next, they just can’t decide on the role

Fans know exactly which ‘Juno’ star they want to see in the MCU next, they just can’t decide on the role

Marvel has done a wonderful job of casting throughout the MCU. It has consistently surprised us with the actors that it chooses to fill the various superhero roles, but its spot-on casting is probably why it sits head and shoulders above the competition. With all the comedic actors that have made their way into the MCU, fans are wondering why the talents of Jason Bateman have yet to be utilized by the studio.

Marvel took some calculated risks for many of their casting decisions, going all the way back to the first superhero of the MCU, Iron Man. At that time, nobody would touch Robert Downey Jr. but after Jon Favreau refused to take no for an answer when it came to casting him he went on to become the face of the whole franchise. There have been other controversial castings since then, who knew that Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation could turn into Star-Lord? Or that comedic and mostly non-threatening Paul Rudd could ever be a superhero?

Nepotism reigns supreme as Michael Jackson’s nephew lands lead role in totally unbiased biopic

The upcoming Antoine Fuqua directed Michael Jackson biopic has every ingredient to be a recipe for disaster, and casting Jackson’s nephew to play the troubled — but otherworldly talented — King of Pop is a legitimate wild card that could either save or completely destroy the film.

Deadline announced Monday that 26-year-old Jaafar Jackson, the son of Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson, is set to give life to his late uncle. This is adding to growing suspicion that the Fuqua biopic will be nothing but a eulogy for the late pop star, whose life was anything but harmonious.

While the Disney Plus exclusives had fans wishing for an official home release, there is currently a debate going on about the new Marvel films that were released about if they were “really good” or “just mid.” And one of them is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Reddit user u/Own-Donkey opened up a discussion of the quality of Shang-Chi on r/MarvelStudios. OP believes that Shang-Chi was really good. They believe that all the characters have good motivations, the fantasy elements were enjoyable, and that it was really good for a standalone story. Tobey Maguire bravely defends Marvel’s consistently inconsistent pre-MCU output

It goes without saying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe changed the trajectory of cinema in its entirety and not just the superhero genre, but it’s not as if comic book adaptations were on life support prior to Iron Man reinventing the game.

Stephen Norrington’s Blade, Bryan Singer’s X-Men, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man are pinpointed as the three most pivotal movies in reigniting a genre that was in real danger of fizzling out at the turn of the millennium, but the downside is that Hollywood decided to rush virtually every recognizable character into development as quickly as possible to capitalize.

Latest Sci-Fi News: Fans develop a whole new phobia of Netflix canceling shows, and a major franchise gets rebooted for the 167th time

Hollywood just doesn’t want to give up the practice of rebooting old franchises, even if the last attempt traces back to no more than a couple of years ago. At least we know some IPs will never die—unlike shows or movie series premiering on Netflix, because the streaming juggernaut loves nothing more than throwing them under the bus as soon as they realize it’s not going to bring in the same numbers as Wednesday or Stranger Things.

Meanwhile, as we inch closer to the premiere of The Mandalorian season 3 on Disney Plus, we’ve decided to take a trip down memory lane and list some of the most badass characters to don the beskar in Star Wars history.

Latest Marvel News: Insane ‘Quantumania’ twist would finally explain the MCU’s oldest mystery as ‘Fantastic Four’ just might right a 20-year wrong

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to live up to its name by doing some pretty crazy things, but this wild theory might just be too bonkers to actually be made MCU canon, even though it would actually explain something we’ve been wondering about practically since the franchise began. Meanwhile, the fab foursome themselves might still be a mystery, but the latest word on the street may have revealed that Matt Shakman’s Marvel film could finally help heal some very old wounds with its choice of villain. Let’s dig in…

Wild Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania theory provides an unlikely answer to our oldest MCU question

Cassie and Scott Lang Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Kathryn Newton will be making her MCU debut in the incoming Quantumania as the third actress to play Scott’s daughter Cassie Lang, following Abby Ryder Fortson in the first two Ant-Mans and Emma Fuhrmann in Avengers: Endgame. The switch from Fuhrmann to Newton is somewhat strange, but fans understand that the recast came out of behind-the-scenes necessity. Well, most fans anyway. This wild fan theory, as shared by one imaginative Redditor, pitches the idea that what if Cassie looks different now because Kang has fiddled with the timeline, replacing Scott’s kid with a variant? This concept is unlikely to be made canon anytime soon, but it’s fun to think about. By that logic, we can say “Kang did it” for every case of Marvel recasting going right back to the franchise’s beginnings.

Netflix’s latest exercise in star-studded mediocrity snatches the #1 spot in 50 countries

One of the most frustrating things about the majority of Netflix’s high-profile original output is that the vast majority follows the exact same formula, with You People the latest – but by no means the last – to blaze a familiar trail.

The streaming service forks over a hefty amount of cash to a talented crew of filmmakers, creatives, and cast members, gives them the freedom to deliver the movie they want, and then sits idly by while it gets widely panned by critics. Even with the names involved, You People is nothing but another star-studded exercise in mediocrity.
