James Gunn ‘unbelievably excited’ for Anthony Carrigan’s role in ‘Superman: Legacy’

We’re getting a lot of exciting news out of the Superman: Legacy casting camp lately. Earlier this week, we reported that Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) were all joining the cast. Now Barry standout Anthony Carrigan is doing the same, and director James Gunn said he was “unbelievably excited” about the prospect.

Carrigan’s star-making turn in Barry, which earned him an Emmy nomination, raised his profile significantly and made him one of Hollywood’s brightest new stars. A role in Superman: Legacy — maybe the most anticipated DC movies ever — will only heighten that.

Carrigan’s been tapped to play Metamorpho, an archaeologist named Rex Mason who was transformed by a radioactive artifact called the Orb of Ra. He’s a shapeshifter who can change himself into any element — or a combination thereof — found in the human body.

In the comics, Metamorpho considers himself a freak and is pretty much always trying to restore himself to his former form. He’s also been part of the Justice League and the Outsiders over the years.

In the right hands, Metamorpho could be a great character. We already know director Gunn is going for levity with the casting of the Guy Gardner Green Lantern over the more well-known Hal Jordan. The casting of Carrigan is just as interesting and exciting.

Gunn is also apparently a big fan too. “I am unbelievably excited for Metamorpho (and this opportunity to work with Anthony Carrigan.)” he said.

Carrigan shared the news on his Instagram page with a very excited caption featuring emojis of all the elements.

As of now, Superman: Legacy starts filming January 2024.
