The Marvel fandom has been served a double dose of superheroics today, as a new “special look” at the forthcoming Black Widow film aired this evening during the College Football Playoff National Championship following this morning’s release of the first Morbius trailer.
The ninety-second trailer opens with more footage and dialogue from Natasha Romanoff’s initial reunion with Yelena Belova, which appears to be interrupted by a SWAT team that causes them to flee on motorbike. We then get additional footage of what looks like a break-out at the mountainside prison facility where Romanoff and Belova extricate Alexei Shostakoff, also known as the Red Guardian. They are joined by Melina Vostokoff, who at one point in the skirmish executes precisely the same spinning thighs-around-the-neck maneuver and landing that Romanoff performed late in her debut in Iron Man 2, establishing the signature move of the Black Widows.
We get an additional line in the dining room scene after Shostakoff dons his Red Guardian suit for what seems to be the first time in a long time, in which he responds to Melina’s accusation that he got fat, and then we’re off to the biggest revelations of the trailer. “There’s a new world of Widows,” Romanoff warns: “New enemies.” She once again assures us that she’s done running from her past, at which point we see a sequence that screenwriter Jac Schaeffer “cried a little bit” watching.
On a dark bridge at night, Natasha confronts and opens fire on the masked figure of the Taskmaster, who wields a shield bearing a red three-pointed symbol that he proceeds to hurl at her Captain America-style. Intercuts show the clips of Romanoff skydiving through falling wreckage while being pursued by masked agents, Red Guardian battling the Taskmaster inside a facility, and a brief bit of new footage of Romanoff fighting against what appears to be the room of Widows-in-training while fully utilizing the Widow’s Bite.
And then we return to the bridge, and a moment certain to get every comic fan’s blood surging: in the midst of their battle, the Taskmaster leaps over Romanoff, deflecting her gunfire with his shield, landing as both fall to the pavement before both kickflip off their backs in unison to face each other in same kneeling position. “Who the hell is that guy?” Romanoff asks on our behalf, and we only have to wait until May 1st of this year, when Black Widow hits theaters, to see for ourselves.
