During their heyday in the 1980s and 90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were in a constant battle for supremacy as to who was the biggest action star in the world. The two icons were incredibly competitive at the time, but ultimately ended up becoming close friends, as well as starring together in the Expendables franchise and Escape Plan.
In a concerted effort to expand his box office reach at the peak of his powers, Schwarzenegger decided to veer into comedy territory, which saw the Austrian Oak star in fan favorites like Twins, Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the Way. The rivalry between the former Governor of California and Stallone was so intense at the time that the architect of the Rocky franchise decided to follow suit, although the end result wasn’t quite as successful as that of his counterpart.
The two have established something of a friendly rivalry in recent years, but back then it was a cutthroat battle as to who was deemed the bigger star of the two. And in a recent interview to promote upcoming sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, Schwarzenegger revealed that he deliberately convinced Stallone to star in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, the 1992 disaster which is often ranked as the nadir of the latter’s career, and is frequently mentioned as one of the worst movies ever made.
“I read the script, and it was a piece of sh*t. Let’s be honest. I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to do this movie’. Then they went to Sly, and Sly called me, ‘have they ever talked to you about doing this movie?’. And I said ‘yes, I was thinking about doing it. This is a really brilliant idea, this movie’. When he heard that, because he was in competition, he said, ‘Whatever it takes, I’ll do the movie’. And of course the movie went major into the toilet.”
That’s some expert-level trolling from Arnold Schwarzenegger, long before the word even became part of the cultural lexicon. Convincing your biggest rival to sign on to a movie that you know is going to be terrible to stop them gaining an advantage over you at the box office is either business savvy or a d*ck move depending on how you look at it, but the fact that the two aging action heroes are still churning out Rambo and Terminator movies in 2019 is an indicator of how it didn’t impact their long-term prospects too badly.
Right before the Disney takeover happened, Fox were busy creating a host of new X-Men spinoffs. Among them was a solo movie for Kitty Pryde which was to be helmed by Deadpool director Tim Miller. Of course, now that the rights to mutantkind are resting with Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige is expected to wipe the slate clean and come up with his own projects that will fit into the MCU. But is there a chance that Miller could make his Kitty Pryde film for Marvel?
Well, no, to put it plainly. Miller spoke to ComicBook.com about his love of the X-Men franchise and his enthusiasm for what he was going to do with Kitty. And it turns out the filmmaker is under no illusion that it’ll actually happen now.
“I love the X-Men. I don’t expect Marvel to call me and say, ‘Come do the X-Men,’ so I’m not waiting for that. I was really excited about my Kitty Pryde movie. F**k, I love that movie. It’ll never happen now.”
Miller proved himself a great fit for the X-universe with 2016’s Deadpool, so it’s a bummer for fans of his and Kitty’s that his film is unlikely to continue with Marvel. Especially as comic book supremo Brian Michael Bendis was set to write the script. Bendis was actually still busy on the movie as late as this February, which is just before the Disney/Fox merger completed in March.
This is the second time this month that one of Fox’s X-Men spinoffs has been confirmed to be dead, as Doug Liman just said a couple of weeks ago that his Gambit movie, starring Channing Tatum, won’t be going anywhere after all. On the other hand, James Mangold still hopes to make his X-23 film with Dafne Keen for Marvel. So, fingers crossed that one comes to something.
Even if Tim Miller’s Kitty Pryde movie isn’t happening, though, there’s a good chance Marvel will reboot the character in the MCU anyway. And if that happens, let us know who you’d want to play the part in the comments section below.
It seems that barely a few days go by without the almost-mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League being teased in some way or another. Zack Snyder himself hasn’t exactly been shy when it comes to dropping either new information or images from his proposed vision for the movie, while fans have once again been demanding that the director’s original cut finally gets finished and released as one of the marquee titles for upcoming streaming service HBO Max.
The troubled production and subsequent speculation on whether or not the Snyder Cut will ever seen the light of day has given Justice League a second lease of life that has managed to keep the two year-old movie relevant, which is somewhat ironic considering how the superhero epic suffered from both critical and commercial disappointment in its original form.
The latest name to potentially tease the eventual release of the Snyder Cut is Junkie XL, who was originally set to score Justice League before being controversially replaced by Danny Elfman in one of the many major changes made to the production following Snyder’s departure and replacement by Joss Whedon.
In a recent interview, the man born Tom Holkenborg certainly makes it sound as though he’d love for his work to be heard by fans at some point, saying that he finished it and it’s apparently great.
“The full score is still there. It’s a really great score, and it’s just there. It never goes away. We’ll see what happens in the future, you know?”
Junkie XL’s comments will only fuel the fire surrounding the Snyder Cut, and with the billions being spent on creating content for HBO Max, there might actually be a way for Snyder to actually cobble together his own cut of Justice League. One of the many reasons why it hasn’t been done yet is due to the potential costs, but with the new streaming platform set to deliver a lucrative new revenue stream, the fans may finally get their wish and see the movie in the way the original director intended.
