As long as all of these live-action reboots continue to haul in absurd amounts of money, Disney will keep making them forever. The next classic film in line to be remade is reportedly Peter Pan. According to our sources – the same ones who told us that the Ghostbusters 3 leads would be young teens, which was later confirmed – the studio is planning to bring the boy who never grows up back to the big screen. Casting has yet to begin, but apparently, those at the top aren’t against the idea of selecting a previously unknown actor for the lead role.
Of course, this long-rumored project is more interesting than the others because of the abundance of films that have already been made about Never Land in the past couple of decades. Disney’s sequel to the original animated movie, entitled Return to Never Land was a moderate box office success back in 2002. The character then apparently had worn out his welcome with the public, as the next two films centered around Peter were colossal flops.
Universal Pictures, Colombia Pictures and Revolution Studio all teamed up for 2003’s live-action version of Peter Pan but despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the feature bombed at the box office. The flick ended up losing over $70 million against a pretty big budget ($130.6 million). One would think that the failure would encourage studios not to continue down this avenue, but that wasn’t the case.
Just over a decade later, Warner Bros. Pictures released Pan as a prequel to the Never Land adventures everyone knows and loves. Unfortunately, though, it suffered the same fate as the last adaptation. Even a cast starring A-listers like Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried, Cara Delevingne and more couldn’t save this film from financial disaster.
Now, Disney will try its hand at remaking their 1953 classic once more. And while the studio is clearly hoping that their magic touch will help the movie perform as well as their previous reboots and not as poorly as some of the other live-action Peter Pan projects we’ve seen, only time will tell how this one pans (sorry, I had to) out.
