When Hugh Jackman was first cast as Wolverine, he was a complete unknown that had been hired three weeks after X-Men started shooting. By the time he retired from playing the character for a ninth and final time in Logan, his portrayal of Wolverine had become an icon of popular culture, gracefully riding into the sunset after starring in one of the greatest comic book movies ever made.
Now that Marvel Studios have reacquired the rights to the X-Men following Disney’s takeover of 20th Century Fox and Dark Phoenix bombed spectacularly at the box office, it’s only a matter of time before the mutants make their way over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Obviously, this won’t be the first time the X-Men will have been rebooted. In fact, most of the major characters in the series have been rebooted or retconned in some way, with the exception of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is so closely associated with the hero that the next actor to take up the mantle is going to be under some serious pressure.
One of the names regularly brought up by fans for Jackman’s replacement though is Taron Egerton, currently earning rave reviews for his performance as Elton John in the surreal Rocketman. When asked about the Wolverine rumors, the Kingsman and Robin Hood star modestly declared his unsuitability for the role, but did express excitement about potentially being involved in the MCU in some capacity, saying:
“That one I think is just a rumor. As far as I’m aware it’s unfounded. I don’t know if I’m quite grisly enough. I mean if the people at Marvel think I am then great, let’s go. But I think there are probably better candidates. But I would love to be involved with that world somewhere.”
Even without making such overt advances, Egerton already seemed like the kind of actor that Marvel Studios would be keen on. Capable of both playing the action hero and winning praise for his dramatic work, the 29 year-old is the kind of well-known but not too established rising star to build a franchise around, with plenty of previous experience working on effects-driven blockbusters.
Time will tell if he’s just playing coy to keep things under wraps or he’s actually on the studio’s radar, but we certainly wouldn’t have an issue with him taking the role.
