Marvel May Cast A Person Of Color As Nova In The MCU

Marvel fans have been waiting for Nova to arrive in the MCU ever since Guardians of the Galaxy introduced the Nova Corps back in 2014. Since then, we’ve had a few near misses. The hero was rumored to be in GotG Vol. 2 and then featured in early versions of Avengers: Infinity WarHowever, it’s looking like the wait is over as all signs point to the character debuting in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3likely before getting his own solo movie.

We Got This Covered has also learned one way in which Nova may be reinterpreted for the big screen. Our source informs us that Marvel might cast a person of color as Richard Rider in the franchise. We’ve been told this decision could be made in order to avoid a backlash against the studio delivering yet another leading white male superhero. However, the important word here is “might,” meaning we don’t know for sure which way it’ll go yet.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed many times now that he’s fully committed to diversifying the MCU in the coming years, though. Shang-Chi is on its way, for instance, offering the franchise’s first Asian superhero. Then there’s increasing talk of Ironheart replacing Tony Stark and maybe Miles Morales arriving, too. Plus, The Eternals is expected to introduce Marvel’s first gay lead character.

Feige has also admitted that Nova’s a name that’s floating around at Marvel HQ at the moment, with reports pointing to Guardians 3 paving the way for Rider to star in his own movie series. It sounds like it’s too early for casting news, but it’s possible we’ll hear something about Marvel’s plans for Nova at this weekend’s Hall H panel that’s expected to unveil the studio’s line-up for Phase Four. It’ll take place on Saturday, July 20th and we’ll have all the updates for you right here, so stay tuned.
