Here’s something we definitely didn’t expect to be writing about today in the aftermath of Game of Thrones.
As those who’ve seen it will surely know, last night’s episode had a Starbucks coffee cup in it that someone managed to slip through the cracks. How it happened, we’re not sure, but unsurprisingly, it’s led to countless memes all over the web and given the company more free publicity than a carefully orchestrated marketing campaign could ever hope to.
Understandably, fans are still in disbelief as to how an innocuous little coffee cup evaded the showrunners and wound up making it onto the screen, but we imagine the shot was filmed multiple times, and the producers just chose a particular take without realizing that Emilia Clarke’s coffee was sitting there in plain sight.
Regardless of how it happened, it’s pretty funny that it did and now, Starbucks has issued a cheeky response to the mishap, Tweeting the following:
“TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.”
Well played Starbucks, well played.
Undoubtedly, this little mistake will go down in Thrones history as one of the show’s most peculiar moments, and we imagine that one day, we’ll learn the full story behind how it happened, and who messed up. Until then, though, there’s lots to look forward to on HBO’s hit fantasy series as it barrels down on its series finale.
Game of Thrones 8×05 airs this Sunday, May 12th, at which point, we’ll no doubt witness an intense stand-off between Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, the pretender to the throne. Sure, she’s only got one dragon left, but with fire in her belly and a glint of malice in her eye, we wouldn’t count Dany out just yet.
