The Walking Dead might be about to reach its tenth season this fall, but the franchise shows no signs of ceasing anytime soon. In fact, AMC is keen to expand the brand in new, exciting ways as we not only have that movie trilogy starring Andrew Lincoln but a bunch of spinoffs on the way, too. So, could this mean that TWD will become as much of a mainstay as something as enduring as Star Trek? Well, one star of the series certainly thinks so.
Ross Marquand, who plays Aaron on the post-apocalyptic program, spoke to Heart FM while attending Middle East Film & Comic-Con about where he thinks the franchise will go in the future. Marquand reminded us that TWD and Fear the Walking Dead will soon be joined by a third show coming in 2020, and all this has convinced the actor that it could go on for at least 30 years.
“We already have Fear the Walking Dead, but there’s already talk of a second spinoff, which would be amazing. I don’t know how that’s going to look, or even if [it happens] — I mean, there’s rumors right now, so I don’t know if that’s actually going to happen. But I would love that. It’s like Star Trek, it’ll go on for like 30 years. Hopefully, yeah, that’d be great. I think the fans like it. It’s a universally loved show because it deals with themes everyone can relate to.”
The incoming spinoff in question was reported to be in development earlier this month. Said to star two young female protagonists, the new show will explore the first generation to come of age in a zombie-filled dystopia. The official description teases it as so: “Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever.”
We’ve also heard rumor of other sister series starring everyone from Lauren Cohan’s Maggie to Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, though the status of those projects is in flux.
