If you’ve had a chance to see Avengers: Endgame already (and if not, then consider this a spoiler warning), then you’ll know that the film sees the reversal of a huge number of deaths. Obviously, the bulk of those fatalities were victims of the snap, but even Gamora and Loki get their own forms of revival thanks to the movie’s alternate timeline plot.
One character whose death seems fairly permanent, however, is Black Widow, who sacrifices herself on Vormir so that Hawkeye can acquire the Soul Stone. Co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely recently reflected on this moment in an interview the New York Times, observing that while the Infinity Stones were use to resurrect many characters, even these coveted relics have their limits. The first to comment on the matter was Markus:
“The biggest question about it is what Thor raises there on the dock. ‘We have the Infinity Stones. Why don’t we just bring her back?’”
McFeely then chimed in to answer Markus’ question:
“But that’s the everlasting exchange. You bring her back, you lose the stone.”
Incidentally, if it’s an everlasting exchange, then does that mean returning the Soul Stone will bring her back? Perhaps that’s a question for another time, but at the very least, we know that Natasha Romanoff is returning for her long-awaited solo movie.
As it stands, Black Widow is expected to be the first entry in Marvel’s Phase 4, and is widely predicted to be an origin story. While plot details remain under wraps, the work will be helmed by Lore director Cate Shortland, and will reportedly serve as the MCU debut for Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh and David Harbour.
Hopefully more details on Nat’s standalone film will emerge as shooting get underway later this year. In the meantime, Avengers: Endgame is now in theaters, and in the midst of a staggeringly successful run at the box office.
