2019 is set to be a huge year for the Star Wars franchise, and while the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX and the Disney Plus show The Mandalorian are two major reasons why, Lucasfilm is also providing fans with an excuse to spend some time outdoors with the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park expansion. And during the Walt Disney Company’s 2019 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger finally revealed the area’s launch dates.
First of all, Galaxy’s Edge is scheduled to open in Disneyland in Anaheim, California, on May 31st of this year. To access this area guests will need valid theme park admission, and until June 23rd, will be required to make a no-cost reservation to gain entry to the region. After that, the second Galaxy’s Edge is due to launch at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, on August 29th.
Either way, fans still have a few more months to wait until they can explore what sounds like a unique and immersive expansion, but as it stands, we already have plenty of details about the area. For one thing, we know that Galaxy’s Edge will be canon to the Star Wars franchise, and will introduce guests to the planet of Batuu, which once served as a bustling trading port, and is now the territory of smugglers and Resistance fighters.
As for rides, visitors will be able to pilot the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, before joining the fight against the First Order when Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opens later in the year. On top of that, the area will boast a generous array of themed shops and eateries, ensuring that Star Wars fans should find plenty of ways to indulge in their geekiest fantasies when the area opens later this year.
