Captain Marvel has yet to prove itself at the box office, but it’s plain to see that Marvel Studios intends for Carol Danvers to be the face of the MCU’s next phase, and if you ask head honcho Kevin Feige, Brie Larson’s character is a heroine with serious potential.
In fact, in a recent interview with Screen Rant, the producer was asked about Captain Marvel’s future in the franchise and teased that they’ve already got some great ideas in mind for a possible sequel. Unfortunately, however, he wasn’t ready to give up any specifics about Carol’s next solo outing just yet. And seeing as she’s just making her big screen debut this week, it may be some time before we hear of the studio’s plans for Captain Marvel 2.
It is in the works, though, and according to sources close to We Got This Covered, it’ll adapt the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. This isn’t a huge surprise given that CM will introduce the Skrulls into the MCU, and we’ve also heard on a few occasions now that Marvel is hoping to get to this particular arc sooner rather than later. But it appears that instead of doing a full blown Secret Invasion movie, it’ll just be worked into Captain Marvel 2.
Details beyond that remain scarce, but it’s exciting to know that it’s on the way and with Carol’s upcoming standalone outing generating a ton of positive buzz online, it’s clear that much of the filmgoing public is pretty pumped to finally meet the MCU’s most powerful hero, which means that there shouldn’t be any worries about the sequel not getting the go ahead.
Box office projections bode well for CM, too, ranging from Researcher Exhibitor Relations’ domestic opening weekend forecast of $118 million, to Box Office Pro’s estimate of $160 million. The real test, however, will arrive when Captain Marvel hits theaters later this week, on March 8th.
