Though Carol Danvers is the one with her name in the title, much of Captain Marvel will take the form of a buddy movie starring Nick Fury opposite the MCU’s most powerful hero, and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brie Larson suggested that she may’ve had a hand in bringing her old friend Samuel L. Jackson into the action.
The two stars of the MCU have collaborated on a couple of projects previously, namely the 2017 films Kong: Skull Island and the Larson-helmed Unicorn Store. So when Marvel Studios gave Larson the option of working with someone else for Carol’s upcoming solo movie, the Oscar-winner knew just who to pick.
“Marvel was like, ‘Is there anybody that you’d wanna do [the movie] with?’” Larson told EW. “And I was like, ‘Please. I need to be with my pal. Don’t let me do it alone!’”
As it happens, pairing Captain Marvel up with Nick Fury is looking like the right move. Not only does bringing Nick into the story ensure that Carol has an integrated place in the MCU right off the bat, but it also allows us to get a little insight on the hardened figure we see in the present-day Marvel saga. We even find out how Fury got his eye patch, so audiences may want to ready themselves for at least one wince-inducing moment.
In any case, with just one week to go until Captain Marvel arrives in cinemas, the film is currently the subject of strong opening weekend projections and similarly promising presales. What’s more, the early social media reactions have been largely glowing and you can expect the praise to continue once the review embargo drops on Tuesday. After that, audiences can see for themselves if Captain Marvel is worth all the hype when it comes out on March 8th.
