Alex Kurtzman is, for all intents and purposes, the main driving force behind Star Trek on the small screen.
He was as an executive producer and writer on Discovery‘s inaugural season, before being handed an increased role within CBS All Access. His mission? To oversee the entire Star Trek franchise as it continues to expand into the TV landscape. And that expansion is well underway.
Discovery‘s second season has already landed and is now nearing the end of what’s been an excellent run, while the Powers That Be are also beginning to make a ton of progress on the Captain Picard spinoff series which will bring us the long-awaited return of Patrick Stewart, a true Trek veteran. Not only that, but CBS also recently ordered up an offshoot centered on Captain Georgiou, which will seemingly involve a “continuation of her adventures in Starfleet’s Section 31 division.”
That’s a lot of content for Trek fans to look forward to, and it seems that if everything goes according to plan, 2021 may be the biggest year yet for the franchise.
Speaking to Kurtzman at PaleyFest recently, TrekMovie.com asked the producer about what’s on the way and first, touched on the progress they’re making on the Section 31 spinoff.
“[Showrunners] Erika [Lippoldt] and Boey [Yeon Kim] are just breaking story now,” Kurtzman says. “And they are double-dutying between season three of Discovery and Section 31. So, we are just breaking story and the plan is to start shooting it as soon as we wrap season three…We don’t have a series order yet. We are just breaking story now. As soon as there is a script—usually they order a series off of a script, but everything is in place now.”
Following that, Kurtzman said that if all goes as planned, then 2021 could potentially see three different Trek shows on the air.
“I would say 2021 or ’22. Maybe ’21…You’ll have our Picard show—as yet untitled. We have Discovery season three, and hopefully Section 31.”
This is hugely exciting to hear and would be the first time ever that the franchise has three different series going on at the same time. In the 1990s, we had both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, and then Deep Space Nine and Voyager, but never before have three separate shows ran concurrently. And if that actually comes to pass, then 2021 might just be the biggest year for Star Trek yet.
But what do you think of this? Is three shows too many? And is there a risk of franchise fatigue? As always let us know down below.
