In a way, Gotham wrapping filming on its final season before the premiere episode had even aired presented a double-edged sword of sorts. On the one hand, it meant that spoilers would flood the internet like never before. But on the other, a variety of trailers hyped certain bullet points to come that gave us all one more reason to tune in each week with increased anticipation.
One such element I’ve been looking forward to seeing is anything involving Jeremiah Valeska. So far, he hasn’t received much screentime during season 5, instead being portrayed as this looming boogeyman. But in a matter of weeks, the producers will pay tribute to an iconic scene known to lovers of Batman comic books and movies alike – that being the Joker’s origin.
Now, even though it looks like the “Joker” name is still off limits for the series, we all know what it’s getting at. Furthermore, my suspicion of the Wayne murders being recreated after seeing the conclusion of “Pena Dura” have been confirmed after reading the following synopsis for “Ace Chemicals”:
Gordon races to uncover the criminal element threatening to end talks of Gotham’s reunification with the mainland. A very much alive Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) returns and organizes a twisted recreation of the murder of Bruce’s parents with the help of Jervis Tetch aka Mad Hatter (guest star Benedict Samuel) in the all-new “Ace Chemicals” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Feb. 21 (8:00-9:00PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-507) (TV-14 D, L, V)
Let it also be known that the network is teasing this as being Jeremiah’s “most twisted plot yet,” so let’s hope it lives up to the hyperbole. Either way, this could very well be when he undergoes a transformative experience. Then again, I suppose a dip into a vat of acid can do that to a guy.
If you’re not up to speed, it’s worth mentioning how Cameron Monaghan was recently confirmed to play a third character on the show, though it won’t be as a third Valeska brother. Rather, we’re led to believe that Jeremiah will forge a new personality, which I’m guessing will call itself “Mr. J” or “J.”
Gotham airs on Thursday nights on Fox, with “Ace Chemicals” set to debut on February 21st.
