Though it could still be a few months before we learn who’s filling Ben Affleck’s shoes as the star of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, it doesn’t feel all that premature to rule out Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt from the running. For one thing, the actor’s contract under Disney might well forbid him from making a DC flick, but more to the point, most of us can agree that he’s just not the right guy to channel the moody gravitas of the Caped Crusader.
Nonetheless, Irish bookmakers have recently given Pratt 16 to 1 odds on being the next Batman, and when MTV’s Josh Horowitz brought this up to the actor himself, the MCU regular seemed even more surprised than the rest of us.
“Really? Wow. I didn’t know that. You can bet on this stuff? Wow. We should bet enough to budget the movie. And then just do a boondoggle Batman that just gets zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Will you be Joker?”
In response to Pratt’s question, Horowitz joked that they’d found “the one way to make this flop,” to which the actor replied, “I would love to, that’d be awesome.” Speaking more sincerely, Horowitz then mentioned that Armie Hammer and Jake Gyllenhaal both have better odds, which Pratt found understandable.
As for how he might play the part, the Jurassic World star was at a loss, saying:
“I don’t know what you do now, because there’s been so many iterations of it. Would you go even lower,” Pratt said, lowering his voice, “And do my voice even more gravelly.”
All in all, we wouldn’t advise putting your money on Pratt to be the next Dark Knight, especially if the recent rumors that the new Bruce Wayne will be in his 20s turn out to be legit. That being said, the actor may have a point when he acknowledges the challenge of making this familiar hero feel fresh and exciting again, though at the same time, Bruce is one of those characters that a film can only change so much before it risks drawing some serious fan backlash.
Regardless, we’ll see what new take on this oft-adapted figure Reeves and his unknown star come up with when The Batman hits theaters on June 25th, 2021.
