Last month we got the surprising announcement that a second live-action Star Wars TV series, alongside The Mandalorian, was in the works. Yes, as you surely know by now, it’ll be a prequel to Rogue One starring Diego Luna as Rebel spy Cassian Andor and will air exclusively on the upcoming streaming service Disney Plus.
Of course, Star Wars fans were pretty excited by the news that we’re getting more from the 2016 movie and though details still remain hard to come by, Production Weekly is now telling us that filming will begin in October of this year, which would put the show on track for a 2020 premiere.
In case you don’t remember, Cassian was a Rebel Alliance Captain and Intelligence Officer and while he met much the same heroic death as his colleagues, he’s no doubt got a pretty interesting past, which gives this prequel show the chance to fill in his backstory with some espionage adventures. Not to mention that it could also allow Lucasfilm to bring back a few familiar faces, like some of his fellow Rogue One rebels, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.
After the cancellation of the Boba Fett movie, it’s interesting to see that the studio’s still very much set on making the jump to television, suggesting that after Solo: A Star Wars Story became the franchise’s first real flop, Lucasfilm is now looking to start putting its eggs in more than one basket, medium-wise. And frankly, that’s probably a good idea.
In any case, the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spinoff is still a long wait away, but in the meantime, at least its Disney Plus companion The Mandalorian appears to be a little further down the path to completion. And as soon as we get any further updates on either show, we’ll be sure to let you know.
