Arise, Captain Marvel, the newfound face of the MCU.
Sure, Marvel Studios (and the rest of the world) may have one eye trained on Avengers: Endgame and its promise of a fitting conclusion to what has been three incredible stages – phases, really – of the MCU, but first comes a standalone superhero movie like no other.
We are, of course, referring to Captain Marvel, the iconic character to be played by Brie Larson, star of Kong: Skull Island and the Oscar-winning Room. Fast forward to 2019, and Larson is ready to venture into Hollywood’s crowded superhero territory for what promises to be a ’90s-set origin movie with a twist. We’ll refrain from delving into spoilers for now, but let’s just say the Captain Marvel film places Carol Danvers smack bang in the middle of an intergalactic war between the Kree and the Skrulls, evil, shape-shifting beings headed up by Ben Mendelsohn’s big bad.
And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, a new promo (see above) has arrived to whet your appetite.
Elsewhere, last week brought word of a potential runtime for Captain Marvel, after AMC listed Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s spinoff as 130 minutes. If true, that would place the movie’s final length in the same bracket as Black Panther (134 minutes) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (133 minutes), though we imagine audiences won’t mind if the film’s finalized runtime proves to be a little longer than expected – she’s the new MCU figurehead, for crying out loud, so get ready to be acquainted with Carol Danvers and her staggering, mind-melting abilities. Thor Odinson, eat your heart out…
Captain Marvel has officially been cleared for take-off. Her ETA? March 8th, 2019. And it can’t come quick enough.
