What Captain America’s New Look Tells Us About His Role In Avengers: Endgame

We lost a lot in the finale of Avengers: Infinity War, but after seeing the Avengers: Endgame trailer, it seems like we can now add one more to the list of casualties: Captain America’s fine beard.

Much admired in the run-up to Infinity War, this lustrous piece of face furniture gave Captain America an appropriately outlaw-ish air and seemed to show how the character had become more complex and conflicted over the years. Now, however, it’s gone, but what could Steve Rogers having a shave signify?

Well, we know he’s back living at the somewhat overgrown Avengers HQ, which implies that in the wake of the catastrophe caused by Thanos’ Decimation, he must’ve been either been pardoned for his actions in Civil War or that there’s simply not enough government infrastructure left to bother to prosecute him. If this is the case, then he may feel that his past conflicts with the administration are over and that he should be more of a figurehead for justice.

With much talk of this being Chris Evans’ final performance in the role, he’s sure to play a more central part in the proceedings than he did in Infinity War, and based on his sombre and depressed mood in the trailer, his arc should be trying to get over the loss of so many friends and put things right in the universe. And if that doing that means making the ultimate sacrifice? Well, he’s done it before in World War II and I have no doubt he’d be ready to do it again if so much was at stake.

Still though, while his beard might be gone, that wig they’ve got him in for Avengers: Endgame is rather… Nicholas Cage-esque. Come on guys, if you’re willing to spend millions of dollars on bringing space monsters from beyond the stars to screens, then get yourself a better wigmaker.
