Star Trek: Discovery will be back for its sophomore run in the new year, and with only a few more weeks to go now until the Starfleet ship enters our orbit again, CBS All Access has dropped a cool new behind the scenes featurette for the show, giving us a peak at what lies ahead.
Though not terribly long, we get to hear from the cast and crew as they tell us a little bit about what to expect from season 2. Of course, there’s also some exciting footage to feast on as well and it all appears to be quite impressive, with the show seemingly having more of a cinematic look and feel to it than it did in its rookie outing.
Just in case it’s not enough to satisfy your appetite, though, we’ve also got the following plot synopsis, which teases those mysterious red signals, the Red Angel, the arrival of Spock and more.
“After answering a distress signal from the U.S.S. Enterprise, season two of Star Trek: Discovery finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery joining forces with Captain Christopher Pike on a new mission to investigate seven mysterious red signals and the appearance of an unknown being called the Red Angel. While the crew must work together to unravel their meaning and origin, Michael Burnham is forced to face her past with the return of her estranged brother, Spock.”
Set ten years before The Original Series, Discovery‘s next run will aim to fill in the gaps between “The Cage” – which had many cast and stylistic changes from the actual show – and the Trek we’re all familiar with. Of course, one big way it’ll do this is by showing us how Spock goes from being the more relaxed, human character we witnessed in TOS‘ pilot to the removed, logician that we came to know and love.
Not only that, but a couple of species from Star Trek past will also put in appearances in the new run and from everything we’ve been told, this next batch of episodes will stick much closer to the tone and rhythm seen in The Original Series, which should please longtime fans.
And it all goes down in Star Trek: Discovery‘s 14-episode second season, which blasts onto CBS All Access on January 17th.
