Title For The Deadpool Christmas Movie Reportedly Revealed

The upcoming PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 seems like a strange venture, to say the least.

As a character who’s known for bloody spectacles and foul-mouthed wisecracking, the idea of a child-friendly Wade Wilson film just sounds downright oxymoronic. And seeing how the PG-13 rating of the upcoming Venom movie has proven enough to dampen the enthusiasm of audiences – and critics – it’s hard to see how there’s much to be gained from this idea.

Still, for better or worse, a softer take on the Merc with a Mouth is coming to cinemas later this year and we now know what we can call it. The BBC’s Lizo Mzimba has the scoop, taking to Twitter to report the following:

“A tiny exclusive. Have heard the planned title for the Christmas Deadpool movie is The Deadpool Before Christmas.”

While that’s a suitably cheeky name for the film, it does bring up the issue that if this is really just a PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2, then branding it with a new title could be confusing for audiences and is also a bit misleading. Then again, Fox has yet to open up on what exactly this movie will be, so it very well could contain a healthy helping of fresh, never before seen footage.

In any case, it’s clear that a lot of fans aren’t too pleased with this whole thing, with many feeling that to remove all the violence and swearing from a Deadpool film would be a complete betrayal of the character.

With X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Gambit once again delayed (the former until June 2019 and the latter until June 2020), it’s clear that something’s going very wrong behind the scenes at 20th Century Fox. I mean, repeatedly delaying tentpole features while re-releasing neutered versions of your hits, like Deadpool 2, feels like desperate, endgame kind of moves. And with Aquaman and Bumblebee scheduled for release on the same weekend as this new PG-13 film for the Merc, you have to wonder how many people will be running to the cinema to see a presumably worse version of a months-old movie.
