Captain America is a lot of things to a lot of people, but for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s the First Avenger – the beating heart and moral compass of this wildly successful franchise.
And though he was given short shrift during Infinity War, we already know that Cap will enjoy a prominent role (and potentially an intense arc?) during the course of Avengers 4.
This, coupled with those leaked set pics of the hero dressed in his Phase One attire, have fueled all sorts of debate online, as curious fans try to solve Avengers 4 and its use of time travel. Surely it’s the only way Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can defeat Thanos? Who knows, but Evans himself damn near broke the internet this afternoon by announcing that he’d now wrapped filming on the hugely anticipated sequel.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote:
Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.
Of course, fans have been rocked hard by the actor’s tweet, thinking it means that Cap’s about to meet his maker. And down below, you’ll find just a sampling of the reactions that’ve been pouring out onto the web.
Why did you just spoil your death pic.twitter.com/PNFND20KzF

This sounds like a very final tweet. I'm not ready to say goodbye to Cap yet, I wish you could keep playing the role for the rest of your life lol. I'm praying that Steve has a happy ending and doesn't die, that would be too hard to watch. You're amazing Chris.
🤞 xx

Marvel: Okay, guys, Avengers 4 is big, so you’ve got to do your best from spoiling it.
Chris Evans: Hold up. I’m tweeting my emotional goodbye from the role of Captain America.
Marvel: Wait, what?
Evans: and send tweet

Given Marvel Studios’ stated desire to introduce new characters in the next phase of the MCU, together with Rogers’ inherently self-sacrificing nature, it’s understandable why so many fans feel that it’s unlikely he’s going to make it through Avengers 4. Now, Evans’ tweet has only added more fuel to the fire and whether he’s hinting at Cap’s death or not, it’s pretty clear that the upcoming sequel will be the last time we see him on screen.
On May 3rd, 2019, the untitled Avengers 4 will shake Marvel’s cinematic universe down to its very foundations, before the likes of Spider-Man: Far From Home and the inevitable sequels to Doctor Strange and Black Panther forge a new legacy in 2020 and beyond.
