There’s a strong case to be made that Stranger Things is Netflix’s biggest sensation. The 80s nostalgia, supernatural storytelling and strong ensemble of characters are all important factors in its popularity, but Eleven’s definitely its biggest poster child. The telekinetic troubled teen’s the star in many ways, so it’s surprising to learn that she was initially set to be killed off after just one season.
Creators the Duffer brothers spoke to NME recently and revealed that their original plans called for Millie Bobby Brown’s character to sacrifice herself at the end of the first run. However, when they started thinking about the future of the show, they reconsidered their options.
“Eleven was going to sacrifice herself to save the day. That was always the end game. But once we realized that the show was potentially going to go on longer than one season, we needed to leave it more up in the air, because deep down we knew the show just wouldn’t really work without Eleven. And at that point, we knew how special Millie was. If there was going to be more Stranger Things, Eleven had to come back.”
Fans will remember that season 1’s finale saw Eleven defeat the Demogorgon by transporting it and herself into the Upside Down. It’s easy to see how this could’ve been it for the character, but a final scene saw Hopper leaving Eggos in the woods, which was enough to tell us Eleven had survived. Sure enough, season 2 revealed that she’d found a way out of the other dimension and was later taken in by Hopper.
Fast forward to season 3 of Stranger Things and we’ve been told that Eleven will finally be allowed to be a regular child. The upcoming run is set in the summer as opposed to the fall so, following Eleven’s adoption by Hopper, it’ll see “Jane Hopper” having fun with her friends in the unthreatened Hawkins town. However, before long, the Upside Down will come calling once again.
