The Wrong Turn franchise has never been the most respected of horror properties, but it has proved surprisingly sustainable, spawning a total of six entries between 2003 and 2014. Now, a report from Bloody Disgusting says that the carnage will continue with another installment that may or may not be a remake
It seems that Constantin Film – the studio behind the Resident Evil movies – is hoping to add another chapter to this series about an inbred family of cannibalistic mountain men from West Virginia. They’ve even brought in Mike P. Nelson, director of the acclaimed new post-apocalyptic thriller The Domestics, to helm the film.
In a rather familiar setup, the movie’s said to feature a group of friends who embark on a hiking trip through the Appalachian Trail. It’s here that they cross paths with “The Foundation,” a community who’ve been living in the mountains since before the Civil War. As is the norm for this series, The Foundation’s unexpected visitors aren’t exactly welcomed with open arms.
The first Wrong Turn was a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-indebted horror hit that starred Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku as two students who end up treading where they don’t belong. Though the film didn’t fare well with critics, the direct-to-DVD Wrong Turn 2: Dead End was eventually released in 2007 to a surprisingly strong response. Such acclaim has yet to be replicated for the franchise, though that evidently didn’t stop Constantin from cranking out four more sequels.
Whether this next Wrong Turn will come out in cinemas or directly to home release remains to be seen, but for anyone with a place in their heart and their stomachs for some backwoods gore that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this may be one to keep an eye on.
