David Gordon Green’s Halloween is just a few days away from reaching cinemas, but if you’d like an early taste of the dread and panic to come, an entire track has now been released from John Carpenter’s soundtrack. “Halloween Triumphant” features elements of the classic 5/4 refrain we first heard in the 1978 original, but with fresh and ominous layers of synth and guitar.
While Carpenter apparently likes the theme music of the first Halloween enough to make it his ringtone, the renowned filmmaker also relished the opportunity to rework his old music using present-day technology. This modern polish can be heard in this tense new piece, which was the result of a collaboration between John Carpenter, his son Cody Carpenter, and composer Daniel Davies, with further input from Greeen.
Though Carpenter also directed the original 1978 slasher, the filmmaker recalled in a recent statement that he actually found some creative freedom in letting someone else take the reigns for this next flick:
“It was great,” Carpenter said of the experience. “It was transforming. It was not a movie I directed, so I had a lot of freedom in creating the score and getting into the director’s head. I was proud to serve David Gordon Green’s vision.”
What resulted from this collaboration was not only a score that Carpenter seems very proud of, but a movie that the composer has held up as the best in the series since his first instalment. Sure enough, the critics seem mostly on board with his assessment, and based on recent box office projections, the feature should be faring even better on a commercial level. At this rate, future outings for the infamous Michael Myers are almost inevitable, with plans reportedly already in motion for a sequel.
You can find out if the new Halloween lives up to this compelling new composition when the film hits theaters on October 19th.
