Jake Gyllenhaal has finally landed his first major comic book movie role, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
News broke earlier this year that Gyllenhaal, star of projects such as Stronger, Nightcrawler and The Day After Tomorrow, has boarded Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home as Quentin Beck (AKA Mysterio), where he’ll presumably star opposite the returning Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/The Vulture).
Of course, the studio is yet to give us an official look at him in the role, but the mere fact that Gyllenhaal’s involved in the sequel is exciting in and of itself – not least because he apparently jumped right to the tip-top of Marvel’s wishlist after Ryan Gosling (!) bowed out of the race for Mysterio.
And now, with filming on the hugely anticipated sequel underway, we’ve received our very first glimpse of the A-lister in the role via a set photo and video. It’s far from official, but at this point, we’ll take what we can get. Not to mention that the character looks great here, with Marvel dressing him in a classic, comic-accurate costume.
Fans on Reddit are already freaking out over this and the only thing we need now is the fishbowl helmet – which will likely be added in post-production, hence why Gyllenhaal isn’t wearing it here.

Dubbed one of Peter Parker’s deadliest foes, Mysterio is a gifted, albeit very under-appreciated special effects guru who yearns to become a bona fide supervillain, and dreams up all sorts of illusions and tricks to counter Spidey’s abilities.
While he’s expected to be the central antagonist of Spider-Man: Far From Home, he definitely won’t be the only villain looking to make trouble for the web-slinger. Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming as well, which has led fans to theorize that the Sinister Six is on its way, though for now, the exact nature of the threat Spidey faces next remains – fittingly enough – a mystery.
Spider-Man: Far From Home has now finished its London shoot and, in keeping with the film’s plot of Spidey on a European tour, has moved on to Prague and Venice. Along the way, we’ve gotten a look at a new costume that’s inspired a lot of debate as to what it might signify. Most notably, this is an all-black suit, which is pretty un-Spider-Man given his usual penchant for red and blue (at least when there aren’t symbiotes in town).
The general consensus seems to be that it’s a stealth suit of some sort, used for when the wall-crawler needs to keep a low profile and do some snooping. But what we have today is perhaps even more intriguing, as seen down in the gallery below is yet another new set photo and this one features what appears to be a mysterious villain.
It’s tough to make out exactly what’s going on here, but it seems as if Ned’s out with a girl at some sort of carnival. However, they’re interrupted by a third figure and though we can’t say for sure, fans are thinking it could be Mysterio. At least, that’s what some people are putting forth over on Reddit.
As we said above, it’s too difficult to say for sure who – or even what – this mysterious third figure may be, but with production continuing to move along and more and more set photos trickling out, it’s surely only a matter of time before we get a proper look at Mysterio. Jake Gyllenhaal’s villain has everyone talking, with fans desperate for an idea of how he may look on screen. With any luck, we’ll get to see exactly that before the year’s out.
And if not, then we’ll just have to wait and see what fresh danger Europe will bring to Peter and his colleagues when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 5th, 2019.
For the first few films of the DCEU, Warner Bros. made Superman into the star of the franchise. But after a string of disappointing outings – not to mention Henry Cavill’s reported departure from the role – it appears that a shakeup’s in order, and that could mean putting Clark Kent’s saga on ice for the foreseeable future.
If you ask writer, director, and podcaster Kevin Smith, however, Warner would do better to keep the Man of Steel alive. Speaking on his podcast not too long ago, the filmmaker urged the studio to keep making Superman movies and now, he’s even offered up a few suggestions for who could replace Cavill in the role.
First up, Smith commented on the recent rumors of Michael B. Jordan of Black Panther fame possibly taking over, and it seems as if he’s totally on board with that.
“I’ll be honest with you, when they said Michael B. Jordan the other day, I was like, ‘Yes, do it, do it.’ And that’s not even a new, like, f— progressive idea.”
“When I was working on Superman in 1996, Will Smith was floated as Superman. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, f— do it,’” Smith said. “And to be fair, that came from [producer] Jon Peters. John Peters was like, ‘Will Smith should play this role.’”
It’s not only Jordan that Smith has in mind, though, as he also threw his support behind both Chris Pratt and John Krasinski.
“Like here — Chris Pratt seems like an ideal Superman, kinda. In terms of personality, seems like a big cuddly kid, likes everybody, and stuff like that.”.
“Krasinski is a great f— pull, too, man. Krasinski has like a Chris Reeve thing going on, excellent f— job,” Smith said. “Krasinski is a really good f— pull. And you let him direct that sh-t as well! But you make him put dialogue in it this time. That’s a really good idea.”
While we agree with a lot of what Smith says here, at this point, it’s tough to predict what Warner has lined up for Superman, with the studio themselves remaining pretty ambiguous on whether or not Cavill has actually left the role. Regardless, we imagine that the Man of Steel will be returning to the big screen somewhere down the line, albeit probably after a longer period of silence than we’re used to.
Cavill’s inevitable replacement probably won’t be announced for a while, either, as don’t forget, WB is currently much more focused on bringing Supergirl to cinemas yet again, so it’s highly advised that you not hold your breath for any news on Superman to surface for a long while. Still, as soon as something does arise, we’ll be sure to let you know.

As a child of the 90s, I have fond memories of wasting money at the arcade. The Jersey Shore was a hotbed of different locations, with hundreds of games spread up and down the boardwalk. Outside of light gun games, the one genre that always caught my interest was the beat ’em up. Even with the rise of console ports, nothing had been able to touch playing these games with friends under the glow of an over-sized arcade machine. Nothing that is, until now, with the arrival of the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle.
Bringing together seven of the iconic studio’s best offerings, the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle is an arcade lover’s dream come true. Excluding licensed titles for obvious reasons, the compilation comes with titles both popular and unknown. Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Captain Commando, The King of Dragons and Warriors of Fate have all been ported previously, but not to this quality. The two other additions, though, Armored Warriors and Battle Circuit, are coming home for the first time. It’s a solid mix of titles, and not just when considering name-brand recognition. Some are traditional brawlers, while others are filled with strange ideas and fresh wrinkles.
Within the set, the two biggest names stand tallest in quality. Final Fight and Captain Commando are still a blast to play in 2018, even if the beat ’em up may feel dated. With a memorable cast of characters and simple, but well executed mechanics, Final Fight is timeless. There’s a reason aspects of it have continued to thrive within the Capcom universe in the years since. While similar to Haggar’s big day out, Captain Commando is enjoyable as well. It’s futuristic setting and strange heroes give it a unique flavor that separates it from the other titles included in the set.
Excluding the fresh ports, the other three titles in the Beat ‘Em Bundle are less exciting, but still enjoyable. Knights of the Round is close to a top-tier beat ’em up, but doesn’t do a ton to stand out. It’s mechanically close to Final Fight, but, while it lacks the personality, it does have a fun leveling system in-place. The King of Dragons is another myth-based brawler, also with an interesting level-up system in-place. Neither are particularly deep, but the ability to level up your character is a good way to integrate score-chasing into something more tangible. Warriors of Fate is based around Chinese history, which at least separates itself from the other two history focused games previously mentioned. Thank goodness it has that, as there is very little here that stands out from the others. It’s perfectly competent, but far from anything special.
I was excited to try the two new to home consoles titles included in the set because I was totally unfamiliar with either of them. Originally released in 1994, Armored Warriors is definitely more advanced than the beat ’em ups released prior to it. The mech-based brawler has you blasting and slicing through countless robotic foes, all while switching out attachments along the way. As different as it may be, though, it was also my least favorite entry here. The action is way too chaotic, and there’s little personality to anything here. Just faceless mech after faceless mech. And while I like the idea of swapping out parts, the fact that both pick-up and melee strike are mapped to the same button is a major issue. It’s too easy to get stuck switching to an attachment you hate while stuck in the thick of battle. Call it a hot take if you want, but I’d prefer any other game included to this one.
Not only making its console debut, but also its North American debut, Battle Circuit may be the weirdest title included in the package. The character designs are off the wall, and the plot is some of the biggest nonsense I can remember reading through. It’s super crazy, and I kind of love it. As one of Capcom’s final releases in the genre, it also feels a little more advanced than the other titles here. The action is smoother and faster, and the option to purchase new moves gives the title welcome depth. It’s a little short, but I’m glad I was finally able to play through it.
From a content perspective, it’s hard to find fault with the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle. Outside of the lone dud, which I may be in the minority on anyway, you get six good-to-great titles that are a blast to play with friends. As long as you got the company, you’re almost guaranteed to have a good time. With that said, I was disappointed with some aspects of the overall package. There’s not a ton of bonus content included, and the lack of visual options is a bummer. Previous Capcom compilations included different visual filters, so the fact that there are none included here is both baffling and disappointing.
As expected, both local and online co-op play are included for every title in the set. Local play still remains the best way to enjoy these games in my opinion, but not everyone has that option. Unfortunately, the online play, in my experience, has been shaky at best. I’ve not only had trouble finding people to play with, but I’ve also encountered numerous issues once I manage to get into a game. The countless bouts of lag have been the most recurring issue, but connectivity problems have also frequently arose. I’m thankful I’m in the position where such a problem doesn’t really bother me, but for those who were looking to play exclusively online, consider this a warning.
In terms of sheer value, Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle is a smashing success. The classics such as Final Fight remain as enjoyable as ever, while lesser known releases such as Battle Circuit get their chance to shine for a new audience. It’s unfortunate that the set feels like it was rushed together at the last minute. I’m not saying these titles need the same love that Street Fighter got earlier this year, but some decent extras would have been appreciated. Still, as long as you got some friends, and are willing to look past the dated mechanics, there are worse ways to spend a weekend.

Rumors relating to The Batman and Ben Affleck’s potential role in it have been coming in thick and fast as of late.
Last time he suited up as Gotham’s Dark Knight, the box office numbers were… underwhelming, to say the least. Indeed, Justice League was heavily criticized for its overstuffed plot and substandard CGI, leading to rumors that, like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck is set to make his exit from the DC franchise.
And while we have no confirmation on the matter one way or another just yet, a whole bunch of actors have been linked to the role of the Caped Crusader in recent weeks. Ryan Gosling, Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and even Oscar Isaac of Star Wars fame are just a few of the names being thrown around, while Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm has already said that he’d love to be our next Batman. But what if the part goes to someone else entirely? Someone that no one’s expecting to see suit up as the Dark Knight?
Speaking on a recent episode of his Fatman Beyond podcast, Kevin Smith put forth a few picks for who he’d like to see replace Ben Affleck. The usual suspects – Hamm, Gosling and even Jake Gyllenhaal – were all brought up, but what was particularly surprising was when the filmmaker threw Thor star Chris Hemsworth into the ring.
“Nobody’s gonna be like, ‘Oh my God! You’ve discovered him,’ and sh-t, but you know who’d make an awesome f— Bruce Wayne and Batman? Chris Hemsworth. He f— made Thor work,” Smith said.
“Just took a character where — in the comics I was never a Thor guy — and he made me f— fall in love with that character. And it was not right away. I think it was Avengers where I started to go, ‘this guy’s f— funny.’ Once they stopped making him be old Thor… I like this version, where he’s self aware and he can play into his charm and be funny.”
Hemsworth is a surprising, in unrealistic pick for the next Caped Crusader. I mean, Smith makes some good points, and the actor’s Marvel contract is now up, but we can’t really see this happening. We could be wrong, but it’s likely that after so long of being tied down to one major superhero franchise, Hemsworth won’t want to hop into another one right away. After all, he’s probably got tons of other projects lined up that he’s been waiting to make but hasn’t been able to get around to doing due to his Marvel commitments.
Beyond that, Hemsworth has actually said a few times now that he’d be open to coming back as Thor for a possible fourth and final solo movie for the God of Thunder. There’s no word on if that’s even on the table at this point, but with Matt Reeves looking to cast his new Dark Knight pretty soon (assuming Affleck really is leaving), ahead of The Batman‘s mid-2019 start, it’s likely that Smith won’t get his wish here.
