A deranged genre-bending cult classic threw everything at the blood-splattered wall, and most of it stuck

If you were asked to design the most deranged movie imaginable on the mandate that it was guaranteed to find long-lasting life as a cult classic, then there’s a distinctly high probability it would turn out an awful lot like co-writer and director Christophe Gans’ Brotherhood of the Wolf.

The 2001 favorite is so ambitious in its insanity that it was always destined to become an underground sensation, but the fact it scored near-identical approval ratings of 73 and 78 percent from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes to go along with its stellar box office haul of $71 million highlights that it was a cut above your average unsung gem.

Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood may be hanging up his hat after one last movie

As the age-old saying goes, all good things must come to an end – and this may soon ring true for Clint Eastwood’s long and storied Hollywood career, with reports offering that the actor and director may be getting ready to direct one final film before retiring. 

Eastwood, 92, is said to be in early talks with Warner Bros. to take a seat in the director’s chair for what is internally being billed as the actor’s swansong, sources tell DiscussingFilm. Michelle Rodriguez refused James Cameron’s pitch to bring her back for ‘Avatar’ sequels

In James Cameron’s Avatar, Jake Sully led a dangerous battle against Earth’s Resource Development Administration, with many humans siding with him in the unjust war. Among them was Michelle Rodriguez’s valiant and dauntless fighter pilot, Trudy Chacón. A skilled pilot, Trudy proved her mettle in the final battle, taking down several enemy aircrafts, but was unfortunately shot down by Miles Quaritch, dying a hero. A decade later, Avatar: The Way of Water brought two major leads back from the original movie, with Stephen Lang’s Miles Quaritch returning from the dead, but Rodriguez didn’t make the cut. Fans might be wondering if she might get a chance to reprise her role in forthcoming sequels in the series, but that’s not going to happen.

In a conversation with Variety, Rodriguez revealed she was indeed approached by James Cameron about her reprising her role as Trudy, although it wasn’t an official meeting regarding casting her in the film. Still, Cameron reached out to the Fast & Furious actor when the two met recently and talked about possibly bringing Trudy back. But Rodriguez was quick to dismiss the idea right away. Katee Sackhoff would love to play Poison Ivy if Mike Flanagan directs

DC has a vast lineup of characters that fans are dying to see in live-action. And as the DCU is undergoing a revitalization, these thoughts don’t seem far-fetched. Among those characters is Poison Ivy, the misanthropic botanist who has recently gained a bigger following through the animated hit show Harley Quinn. Now, another actress has set eyes on the valuable name from Batman’s rogues’ gallery.

Katee Sackhoff has brought Star Wars’ Bo-Katan Kryze to life across the franchise’s animated works to the mainstream live-action universe. And now she’s hoping to do the same to Poison Ivy, who she has already played in Batman: The Long Halloween film series. Marvel Studios ‘Thunderbolts’ bolsters writing team with new addition

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts is in active development. Marked as the penultimate film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five, Thunderbolts has a large and exciting ensemble assembled for what would become the first appearance of the eponymous team of anti-heroes from Marvel Comics. With names like Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the film is already the recipient of substantial hype. At D23 Expo last year, Kevin Feige unveiled the cast, announcing Jake Schreier as director, with the film’s script in development under screenwriter Eric Pearson’s leadership. Now, Marvel has leveled up the writing team with a new addition.

Lee Sung Jin, known for creating the upcoming Netflix comedy Beef is joining the team to rewrite the script and is potentially replacing Pearson, who previously co-wrote Black Widow and Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel. Jin comes on board at Jake Schreier’s recommendation, who has directed six episodes of Beef and executive-produced the show. Jin confirmed his involvement in Thunderbolts in a conversation with Variety while promoting Beef.

‘Quantumania’ implosion has MCU haters claiming the real reason behind Marvel fatigue

Critically reviled reboot squats on top of HBO Max charts

Say what you will about reboots and remakes in the world of film, television, and gaming, but the numbers don’t lie, this stuff sells – no matter the quality of the fresh take on the intellectual property that is being adapted. 

In this case, the quality is questionable at best, but in the past day, the 2023 reboot of House Party has soared to the top of HBO Max’s global streaming charts nonetheless, per data coming in from FlixPatrol. Since its debut on the streaming platform at the beginning of the month,  House Party has lingered in HBO Max’s top ten most-viewed movies, before finally snagging the number one spot just yesterday.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is avoiding one specific problem that doomed ‘Black Panther 2’ on Disney Plus

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water was a monumental success when it hit the theaters in December 2022 and emerged as one of the biggest box-office earners in the history of Hollywood proving that all the skepticism against it couldn’t dismantle its decided success. But it is now on Disney Plus and many of the criticisms against it are back in full force — whether it is its rather long runtime or how its plot is just a rehash of the first film. Thankfully, one thing that is working in Avatar 2’s favor is that its streaming release managed to neatly side-step a big problem that bogged down the hype around Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Disney Plus debut.

Back in February, when Black Panther 2 was released on the streamer — fresh from its stellar success in the theaters — every MCU fan was understandably looking forward to binging it again and marvel at the way it dealt with Chadwick Boseman’s tragic passing. But it soon became apparent that the film was a dark watch in more ways than one as it was beyond difficult to see what was happening in some scenes because of poor lighting, and more so in scenes that were taking place at night, which didn’t register during its theatrical release.

Jason Momoa needs to look at Zachary Levi if he thinks having friends in high places will protect him from DC oblivion

There are a lot of superpowers that save the day in the DC universe, but two stars of Marvel’s chief rival for comic book cinema domination seem to believe that the most important is the power of friendship. Or, at least, the power of having friendships with those in power. Aquaman himself Jason Momoa has finally broken his silence on the potential for the King of Atlantis to swim into James Gunn’s rebooted DCU, and it’s sounding suspiciously similar to Zachary Levi‘s responses about Shazam.

“Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend,” is what Momoa told Total Film (via GamesRadar) when asked about what’s next for Arthur Curry once the James Wan-directed sequel arrives this Christmas season and the reboot button is hit on the shared franchise. “I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman!”

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ gets a release date

Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited and much highly anticipated crime-thriller, Killers of the Flower Moon, has been developing since 2016, when Imperative Entertainment won the rights to the book it’s based on. While the film only moved to production after Scorsese finished working on The Irishman, it was confirmed at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards that the film would mark the ultimate unison of Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio. And now, the film has landed a confirmed release date.

Paramount and Apple have jointly confirmed that the film will release theatrically on October 6, 2023. A worldwide distribution on October 20 will follow the limited release. The film has already been confirmed to release on Apple TV at an unspecified date. Before that, the film is set to do rounds at several film festivals across the globe. Made on a budget of almost $200 million, the movie is slightly shorter than three-and-a-half hours.

‘Captain America 4’ looks set to feature an MCU return fans have been waiting 15 years for

Captain America: New World Order includes a number of eyebrow-raising additions to the cast, with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson being joined by Shira Haas as perhaps the most controversial hero to enter the MCU to date and Harrison Ford as a recast Thunderbolt Ross. An intentionally ridiculous chase thriller with a unique place in history puts pedal to the streaming metal

Any movie released from March of 2020 onward was doomed to fail due to the pandemic, but in another parallel reality, director Derrick Borte’s intentionally ridiculous chase thriller Unhinged would have become an instant cult favorite and sleeper hit.

An Oscar-winning sci-fi blockbuster without an action scene in sight didn’t need them to become a cosmic classic

It’s not so much an obligation as a general rule of thumb, but any big budget sci-fi movie backed by a major studio featuring a cast of recognizable stars seems destined to feature at least one action sequences, presumably for the purpose of making exciting trailers as opposed to relying on existentialism. Thankfully, Arrival didn’t get the memo.

Denis Villenueve has become one of the industry’s foremost purveyors of atmospherically acclaimed cosmic capers over the years, a trend that’s no doubt going to be carried on when the second chapter of Dune releases later this year. Arrival was his first proper stab at making intimate intergalactic dramas on a blockbuster budget, though, and it went phenomenally well.

This ‘Harry Potter’ theorist solves one of the franchise’s deepest mysteries

The fifth installment of Harry Potter, Order of the Phoenix, is one of the finest outings in J.K. Rowling’s best-selling series. The film is known for its catapulting shift to Harry’s primary conflict against Voldemort and for bringing the latter’s threat into the magical world. With new characters, more magic, and way more enthralling wand duels, Order of the Phoenix took the franchise to new heights of adventures.

Unfortunately, that movie has also suffered from a mysterious plot hole. In the film, when Harry arrives at Hogwarts, he and his friends meet Luna Lovegood. The weird-behaving girl is a charming and intelligent one who, like Harry, can see the Thestrals driving their wagons. Up until that moment, Harry was unaware of these creatures. Later, when Harry confronts Luna in private, she tells him that only a person who has witnessed death can see Thestrals. Luna has seen her mother pass away, making Thestrals visible to her. It’s implied in the movie that Harry can see them because he witnessed Cedric’s murder the previous year.

‘Star Wars’ fans rally behind one major change that could have saved the sequels

Star Wars: The Force Awakens begins with an impactful and nostalgic sequence, wherein Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is captured trying to find the location of the legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker. However, that scene introduces another character who later takes center stage in the alliance’s struggle against the First Order. A stormtrooper shockingly witnesses Kylo Ren’s massacre while seemingly suffocating under his mask. When he eventually removes his helmet, it marks John Boyega’s first appearance in the franchise as Trooper FN-2187, later known as Finn.

Wasn’t it the most exciting introduction to a potentially significant character? A stormtrooper who watches his fellow trooper die and defects to the rebellion after witnessing the crimes of the First Order. He joins the fight from the other side, rising in the alliance’s ranks, possibly trying to bring other troopers to the right side after helping them see through the truth.
