‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ offers fresh look at Gil-galad, High King of Noldor

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ offers fresh look at Gil-galad, High King of Noldor

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place in the middle of the Second Age, which means that we’ll be introduced to a number of great characters from Middle-earth’s past. One of these is Gil-galad, the High King of Noldor, who fought Sauron and thwarted his plans numerous times throughout his life.

After the War of Wrath, Gil-galad settled in Lindon and founded a new kingdom there, which prospered from Greenwood all the way to the doorstep of the Misty Mountains. When Sauron invades Eriador with a great host and captures Eregion where Celebrimbor — the legendary elven blacksmith and the maker of the rings of power — resides, Gil-galad stands his ground at the Grey Havens and, aided by a fleet of Númenoreans from the south, decisively defeats Sauron and destroys his armies.

Michael Bay is refreshing the company that made some of the worst horror movie remakes of the 2000s and 2010s

If you saw a horror film remake in the days of former Presidents George W. Bush or Barack Obama, the chances are Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes banner was behind it. They began with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, gave the world A Nightmare on Elm Street in 2010, and Bay is refreshing the A Quiet Place company to make the next generation of schlock and quality sci-fi.

News of the 57-year-old finding a new home for Platinum Dunes at Universal is reported today in an article from The Hollywood Reporter. Bay began the company with Brad Fuller and Andrew Form in 2001. Fuller and Form left in 2018, Bay created his own Bay Films later on and now Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer says the space will be making innovative work for them.

An action thriller with one of the most bizarre casts ever draws a crowd on streaming

An action thriller with one of the most bizarre casts ever draws a crowd on streaming

B-tier action thrillers are the bread and butter of the VOD circuit, and often feature a mix of jobbing A-listers, fallen stars, and up-and-coming rookies seeking to get their foot in the Hollywood door. In the case of Jared Cohn’s Vendetta, he seems to have gone out of his way to gather the most eclectic and random ensemble as humanly possible, with great success we should add.

Most likely due to its nonsensical cast, Vendetta has been tearing it up on streaming per FlixPatrol, having landed on the iTunes most-watched rankings in multiple countries.

Elizabeth Olsen refused to watch the ‘Doctor Strange 2’ screener Disney sent her

Actress Elizabeth Olsen, who is promoting a children’s book she wrote with her husband, says she really does not know if her Scarlet Witch will ever return to Marvel. Now she’s revealed she hasn’t even seen Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

“I’m not one of those [actors who doesn’t watch their own movies]. I’m one of those people who likes to study something so I can figure out how to make it better. But I had a cold when we had the premiere and I didn’t want to sit through it. And so, I asked them to send a copy so I could watch it, and it had my name on it and it had the time that I was watching it and I didn’t want to watch it like that. My name was on it and the exact time and date. It’s just distracting.”

Rob Zombie reveals the unlikely return of another ‘Munsters’ OG

Some folks are still understandably perplexed that Rob Zombie, of all people, is leading the family-friendly reboot of The Munsters. But the House of 1000 Corpses director has vowed to remain true to the original ‘60s sitcom — so much so that Zombie has been devoted to bringing back several memorable characters from the show’s OG run.

As production has progressed over the last few months, Zombie has religiously shared photos to his official Instagram showcasing the ins and outs of the authentic set and true-to-origin cast of characters. Zombie has continued this tradition where, earlier today, he revealed that the ominous character Tin Can Man will be returning for the Universal movie. “I am thrilled to have another original Munster in my new film. Get ready for some robot fun,” Zombie wrote in his post.

‘E.T.’ star addresses the likelihood of a sequel

‘E.T.’ star addresses the likelihood of a sequel

While some cinematic masterpieces have received countless forgettable (and sometimes unnecessary) sequels following the success of an original, other favored movies have never received a proper sequel — despite a slew of fans pining for one. This can certainly be said about Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi phenomenon E.T. Now, over 30 years after the movie’s acclaimed release, star Henry Thomas has dished on whether the Spielberg vehicle will ever get a sequel.

For some background, the popular ‘80s film told the story of a young boy named Elliot Taylor who encounters an extraterrestrial being after discovering the alien has been left behind on planet Earth. Elliot — portrayed by Thomas — eventually names him E.T., and the two form a close bond. While chatting with ComicBook.com, Thomas mentioned a recent Xfinity ad that featured E.T. sparked the conversation about a sequel but expressed confidence that the stunt was probably as far as Spielberg would go rather than an actual sequel.

That’s right. While the question might confuse you — I mean, it’s definitely giving Taika Waititi all manner of headaches — it might actually be in reference to all the amazing feats of cinematic insanity that await you in the sequel, not to mention the teaser is once again backed up by the iconic Guns N’ Roses track, “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

Dakota Johnson demonstrates the correct way to address NFTs in a social setting

Dakota Johnson demonstrates the correct way to address NFTs in a social setting

NFTs are a sensitive subject to broach, especially among people who still retain enough common sense to see through the sham of the greater fool theory and keep a healthy distance from the whole thing. But even if you’re not aboard the blockchain hype train, things can still get distinctively irritating when celebrities and famous people dip their toes in crypto waters just to make a quick buck or, in the most buoyant of scenarios, simply remain a bit more relevant.

Well, this seems to be your lucky day, because the “no bullshit” portion of the online community might have a new champion to represent it in the form of Dakota Johnson. In a recent profile in Vanity Fair, the free-spirited actress — most commonly remembered for appearing in the Fifty Shades trilogy but otherwise best known for always speaking her mind and standing up for herself — talked about that one time she addressed the matter of NFTs in a social get-together.

Bette Midler assures the Sanderson sisters from ‘Hocus Pocus’ will adopt your baby

In the aftermath of Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court overturning the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade over the past week, acting force Bette Midler has joined the “we’ll adopt your baby” meme by assuring online fans that the Sanderson sisters from Halloween staple Hocus Pocus will adopt your baby. And yes, this is an actual thing.

Earlier today, on her official Twitter account, Midler posted an image of the Sanderson sisters — played by Midler, Sarah Jesicca Parker, and Kathy Najimy — will do a little “hocus pocus” magic and adopt your baby in the midst of legal abortions becoming a state-by-state decision. “We’ll adopt your baby,” was written in the caption of the tweet.

Natalie Portman never thought she’d get to be Mighty Thor

Natalie Portman never thought she’d get to be Mighty Thor

Marvel fans lost their collective minds when they found out that Jane Foster would be returning to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, leaving astrophysics for superheroism by donning the mantle of the Mighty Thor; evidently, watching her clutch Mjolnir to the iconic riff of Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” is a surefire goosebumps recipe.

And it appears Natalie Portman herself, who has portrayed Foster in the MCU ever since her debut in 2011’s Thor, was caught just as off-guard as the rest of us when she found out that she would become the Mighty Thor. As she stated in an interview with ComicBook.com, her character picking up the Thor mantle did not occur in the Marvel comics until 2014, which came after her last appearance in the MCU, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Back then, the actress never expected her character to return in such an explosive manner.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ sequel set to spook audiences over the festive season

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ sequel set to spook audiences over the festive season

Sony has officially handed the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife a — very surprising — release date. The studio went all out on making sure the 2021 movie was a stronger relaunch of the franchise than 2016’s reboot, and, while it didn’t blow up the bank and received somewhat mixed reviews from critics and fans, clearly Jason Reitman’s ode to his father Ivan’s 1984 original did the job as a sequel is on its way… next holiday season.

The next Ghostbusters movie — which we can call Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, Ghostbusters 4, or, if you’re feeling particularly chaotic, Ghostbusters 5 — has been assigned the official release date of Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023. This marks a huge first for the series, which has never premiered during Christmas before. The ’84 flick, 1990’s Ghostbusters II, and Answer the Call all came out as summer blockbusters.

We might have to wait a bit longer for that ‘Blade’ remake

Fans of the Marvel vampire slaying franchise Blade rejoiced when it was announced that popular actor and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali was going to lead the reboot of the series. Now it looks like that movie may be delayed.

The Cosmic Circus is reporting that Blade was originally supposed to start filming on July 4, which is strange in general because it’s a national holiday, but whatever. That was based on a list on productionlist.com, which can admittedly sometimes get things wrong.

‘Star Wars’ supporters try to clear up the biggest misunderstandings among fans

Star Wars lore is so varied and expansive that it’s bound to create some misunderstandings among viewers — and possibly even among writers!

Fans in the Star Wars subreddit are focusing on themselves, though, as they’re choosing “the most frustrating thing in Star Wars people get wrong often,” the first of which is “that people often think the Empire’s Stormtroopers are all clones in OT [original trilogy].”

The 10 best fight scenes in ‘Star Wars’

The two poles of Star Wars are its love of Eastern philosophy and mysticism and how much its fans enjoy watching people hit each other with laser swords. The best fights in the history of the franchise attempt to bridge that gap, reminding us that great fighting can have some thematic and spiritual heft. Of course, there are also of plenty of fights in Star Wars that are just plain cool, whether they occurred inside one of the movies or were on TV. There’s nothing better than a little lightsaber play, so in honor of that, here are the best fights in the history of the franchise.

Luke vs. Darth Vader, The Empire Strikes Back

Perhaps the definitive Star Wars fight, what makes Luke’s first face-off with Darth Vader so epic is the incredible production design around it. Cloud City has never been topped as a Star Wars location, and while Luke finds himself totally outmatched by Vader, watching him get a beating remains thrilling to this day. It doesn’t hurt that the fight climaxes with Vader’s immortal revelation about Luke’s father, but that’s really just the icing on top of the cake that is this phenomenal battle.

Chris Hemsworth teases an ABBA dance number was cut from ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Chris Hemsworth is due to show the world not every god has a plan when Thor: Love and Thunder premieres July 8 and now, ahead of the work’s release, he is saying the piece almost included a track from ABBA which was a full-on dance sequence, too.

“There was…to an ABBA song…but it didn’t make the movie for a few reasons. But we need to release it at some point, don’t worry. It’s a full dance scene. It’s a full dance-off shooting lightning out his finger tips and so on.”

‘The Princess’ writers call upcoming fantasy movie ‘Rapunzel meets The Raid’

If the title wasn’t already taken, Hulu’s upcoming dark fantasy action comedy film, The Princess, may have been called The Two Towers. Writers Jake Thornton and Ben Lustig revealed that their two greatest influences on the script were two iconic fictional towers, the fairy tale prison of Rapunzel, and the high-rise apartment block that provides the setting for Gareth Evans’ seminal 2011 Indonesian martial arts slug-fest, The Raid.

While the Grimm’s fairy tale Rapunzel is a no-brainer when it comes to inspiration for a modern fairy tale, The Raid, a movie about an elite squad of Jakartan police officers who fall into an apartment block-sized death trap while attempting to raid the home of a ruthless drug lord, may seem like it’s completely out of left field. But Thornton explains that he and Lustig found the idea to be a hand-in-glove fit for a movie deliberately deconstructing the damsel in distress trope.

Jason Schwartzman has joined ‘The Hunger Games’ prequel — in the perfect role

Jason Schwartzman has joined ‘The Hunger Games’ prequel — in the perfect role

Yet another star has boarded the much-anticipated Hunger Games prequel movie. Based on author Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel of the same name, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to relaunch the YA dystopian franchise, formerly headed by Jennifer Lawrence, in a big way. And while there might be a Katniss Everdeen-sized hole in the film, Lionsgate is hoping to fill it with an abundance of familiar names and upcoming faces.

The latest to volunteer themselves as tribute is Jason Schwartzman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). As per The Hollywood Reporter, the Fargo alum has been cast as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman. That last name should be familiar to Hunger Games fans as Lucky is the ancestor of Panem’s favorite talk show host, Caesar Flickerman, memorably played by Stanley Tucci in the original four films.
