An unlikely war movie charges up the streaming charts
Given the current climate and what’s going on in the world around us, it’s hard to believe that a huge number of people are actively seeking out war movies as a means to whittle away a couple of hours, but 15 Minutes of War looks to be the exception that proves the rule.
As per FlixPatrol, the 2019 French/Belgian co-production has rocketed up the iTunes most-watched list to come within touching distance of the global Top 20. The true-life story was mildly received by critics to put it lightly, but a 43% Rotten Tomatoes score is vastly outweighed by an 88% user rating, so it’s clearly been appealing to audiences to a greater degree.

Frank Grillo signs on for his 4th movie in less than 2 weeks
Some actors get into the business for love, while others do it for the money, but there’s also a select few who sign on to as many projects as humanly possible for no other reason than they enjoy the work, and actively seek to keep themselves as busy as possible, and Frank Grillo is definitely among that number.
Not content with appearing in nine movies and a TV show last year, the grizzled badass just keeps on going. Deadline has revealed that Grillo will be co-starring with Harvey Keitel in action thriller Hard Matter, and if you can believe it, this marks the fourth new outing he’s been confirmed for in less than two weeks.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande about to get ‘Wicked’ on the big screen
The beloved musical theater production Wicked is finally flying to the big screen, with lead roles filled by award-winning performers Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The stars of the film have been eager to share the process so far, and to share their joy with fans at being cast in the movie adaption.
Grande is probably as well known as they get — both in the music world, and for her role in Nickelodeon’s Victorious as ditzy Cat Valentine. She first starred on Broadway when she was 15 years old as Charlotte in the musical 13, and went on to play Penny in Hairspray Live! back in 2016. The pop princess will be taking on the role of Glinda the “good” witch, opposite Erivo’s “wicked” witch, Elphaba. Erivo has plenty of stage and screen experience under her belt, as well as various accolades for her acting and singing, including a Grammy and Tony awards, and an Oscar nomination.

‘Uncharted’ has already outgrossed ‘Jungle Cruise’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’
After years stuck in development hell and then facing multiple COVID-related delays, Uncharted seemed destined to become a huge flop. And yet, while you wouldn’t quite say it’s reaching uncharted heights of success, Sony’s video game adaptation is proving to be a pretty big hit with audiences. The lack of critical praise hasn’t stopped cinemagoers lapping up the action/adventure, with the movie already outgrossing a couple of other notable would-be blockbusters from the past few months.
After opening in U.S. theaters two weeks ago, Uncharted has earned more than $226 million globally, with this figure factoring in the $23 million that came in this weekend, which saw Uncharted hold on to the top spot at the worldwide box office. This means that the film has already brought home more than more Dwayne Johnson vehicle Jungle Cruise and legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which grossed $220 million and $197 million respectively across their entire runs.

‘Morbius’ director says Jared Leto was predestined to play the role
There are a number of comic book movie stars who seemed fated for their roles. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine… Actors like those two embodied their characters so well, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing them. And maybe we’re about to add one more to that select list. Morbius director Daniel Espinosa has declared he believes Jared Leto is so perfectly cast in the title role that it was “predestination” that he got the part.
In comments released via a press release from Sony, Espinosa summed up why Leto was the only person able to play Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who subjects himself to a dangerous treatment in an attempt to cure his rare blood disease, causing him to transform into a blood-sucking bat-human hybrid in the process.

‘Morbius’ star reveals surprising real-world inspiration for their character
Morbius, what with its living vampire protagonist, won’t be the most realistic movie you’ll see in a theater this year, but one of the Sony/Marvel film’s stars has revealed that they based their own performance on a fascinating real-life figure. With Jared Leto in the leading role, Morbius follows brilliant scientist Dr. Michael Morbius as he attempts to cure his rare blood disease, but ends up transforming himself into a blood-sucking monster in the process.
Portraying Michael’s fiancée and fellow scientist Martine Bancroft is Adria Arjona (6 Underground, Pacific Rim: Uprising). In the official Morbius press notes, Arjona opened up about how she approached her role, which is loosely adapted from the character of the same name from the comics. The Good Omens actress praised Martine’s confidence and intelligence, calling her “Morbius’ rock.”

A gripping true-life thriller burns down the competition on streaming
Audiences have always tended to be fascinated by despicable people, which is why the true crime docuseries has proven to be a relentlessly popular medium for networks and streaming services. It’s also just as true in the fictional realm, too, as evidenced by the latest dramatization of the Ted Kaczynski story.
Even though it’s been less than five years since Paul Bettany played the role in Discovery’s nine-episode series Manhunt: Unabomber, Sharlto Copley tackles the infamous domestic terrorist in Ted K, which scored a limited theatrical and VOD release last weekend.

Nightcrawler actor pumped about Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange 2
Kodi Smit-McPhee might not be a household name just yet, but that could change for the young actor very soon, especially since his Oscar-nominated appearance in the Netflix awards season darling The Power of the Dog which also netted him a Golden Globe. Even red-hot young actors are fans too though, and Smit-McPhee loves Patrick Stewart as much as the rest of us, and he’s excited about the veteran actor’s return as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Smit-McPhee played Nightcrawler in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, where he got to work directly with Stewart, so he has a bit more experience with him as Charles Xavier than the rest of us. In a recent interview with the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, the young actor expressed just how excited he was about the prospect of Xavier’s return in the Marvel Extended Universe.

Zack Snyder rallies fans to send ‘Army of the Dead’ to Academy Awards
Basking in the glory of his GOAT hashtag given to him by his fans on Twitter, Justice League director Zack Snyder reached out to his social media following to encourage them to vote for his 2021 film Army of the Dead, to get the “Fan Favorite” Academy Award.
The film, a “spiritual successor” to 2004’s Snyder-directed Dawn of the Dead remake scripted by James Gunn, stars David Bautista as a mercenary hired to break into a casino in zombie-ridden Las Vegas and steal $200 million from its vault. The film received mixed reviews on its release, with a 67% “fresh rating” on critical aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and a score on Metacritic of 57 out of 100. However, that didn’t stop Netflix from immediately greenlighting an Army of the Dead prequel, Army of Thieves, which also released in 2021.

Why does General Grievous cough?
General Grievous, Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies, was one tough cyborg. More machine than man, the Kaleesh warlord earned a reputation as the most successful Jedi hunter in the galaxy, with the trophies to prove it.
Grievous killed more than a dozen Jedi Knights (some speculate upwards of 30), after being secretly trained in lightsaber combat by Count Dooku. Equipped with all manner of cybernetic enhancements, by the time Grievous faced off with General Kenobi, the only organic body parts he had left were his eyes and brain. Talk about commitment.

Hollywood remembers actress Sally Kellerman
Sally Kellerman passed away on Thursday at age 84 from complications of dementia following a stay in assisted living. Kellerman was a Hollywood stalwart, regularly working in television and film for over sixty years. Today, her friends, fans, and fellow stars took to social media to remember the iconic actor and singer.
Kellerman received praise for her Oscar-nominated role of Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H and opposite Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School, as well as Television roles in Star Trek, American Virgin, and Maron. She went on to appear in two more Altman projects; the quirky black comedy Brewster McCloud and a cameo performance in his star-studded satire on the film industry, The Player. Kellerman was nearly in Altman’s surreal Country and Western send-up Nashville as well, but it didn’t work out. Kellerman recounted in her memoir, Read my Lips: Stories of a Hollywood Life, “Bob called me one day at home. “Sally, do you want to be in my picture after next?” he asked. ‘Only if it’s a good part,’ I said. He hung up on me.”

A hugely underrated psychological horror retreats up the Netflix ranks
The problem with the constant deluge of horror-tinged content that tends to arrive in theaters, on streaming or VOD on a weekly basis is that some great movies end up slipping through the cracks to go undiscovered for the longest time, but the underrated and overlooked The Lodge is finally experiencing a renaissance on Netflix.
Co-written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the chilling psychological story premiered in January 2019, but didn’t score a limited theatrical release until the following February, resulting in a meager box office haul of just over $3 million.

Benedict Cumberbatch being sued over unmade Roald Dahl movie
Earlier this year, it was announced that Marvel’s Benedict Cumberbatch had signed up to lead an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, as directed by Wes Anderson, for Netflix. This isn’t the first time the British actor has been attached to a project based on one of the acclaimed children’s writer’s works, though. Back in Nov. 2019, his production company SunnyMarch landed the rights to make a film based on Danny, the Champion of the World, with Cumberbatch also due to star.
The production never materialized, however, and that’s now causing Cumberbatch some legal repercussions. As per Variety, Portobello Productions has filed a lawsuit against SunnyMarch for allegedly wrongfully holding onto the rights for the script that was penned for the film by David Nicholls (One Day) even though their agreement has expired. SunnyMarch and Portobello originally commissioned Nicholls to provide a script together, with the idea being to find a director to work alongside him within 12 months.
